To our surprise, we arrived in Rothenburg ob der Tauber just as they were preparing for their annual parade. Felt very lucky that we were able to witness this wonderful festival. However, we ran out of time before the shops closed to do the shopping I anticipated. We were hoping to make a return visit but we were in Germany for my husband's work and time would not allow it. So disappointed! Hoping to order something from the woodburning shop but can't find an e-mail address or website. Anyone have any info for this shop? Any other shops offer shipping besides Kathe Wohlfahrt? Thanks for any help you may offer.
Tammy
Yes it was a Sunday! I was a little surprised that the shops wouldn't have extended their hours with all the people there for the festival. Lesson learned.
Wow, James. I thought I was asking an innocent question. My family only had Saturday and Sunday for travel because my husband was working. Obviously, we had planned on returning but he worked all day on Friday and by the time we would have driven there they would have been closed again.
If you read through that other thread, you'll learn just how wrong you were to assume it's okay to shop on Sundays. And not only will you realize you're a bad person, you'll also understand that your family values are in the crapper. Oh yeah, and you hate workers, too. Yep, Beelzebub's evil plan to corrupt Germans through Sunday shopping has received a serious smack-down in the Fatherland.
You must have been there on a Sunday...we just learned all about archaic, intrusive, and government-dictated Sunday closure laws over in another thread (Verkaufsoffener Sonntag). You're proof positive that these Sunday closures are ruining vacations for Americans. :) BTW...I was just in Minneapolis and learned there's a Käthe Wohlfahrt store in Stillwater, which is just northeast of the Twin Cities...I was shocked.
Seems a little rough to chew up a poor innocent new poster in your nasty little war about Opening Sundays doesn't it lads?
Actually, most tourist areas have their shops open all the time, holidays, evenings, and Sundays. That said, since you couldn't buy it there, you can order all that stuff online. Or if you are traveling through Germany, you can get the same items in many locations. http://www.erzgebirgepalace.com/?XTCsid=2kekhnucm4lvhib6139ujf44k4
Nigel: It was meant to be facetious. Still, maybe we should all skip Germany and head to the Middle East, where we don't have to worry so much about fundamentalist religious laws affecting our visit. How about Dubai? It's one of the world's true shopping meccas with shopping orgies galore...tons of malls open all hours every day of the week and an annual shopping festival for two straight months. Who would have thought a Muslim country would be more progressive than Germany? :)
