Does anyone have an opinion about getting European train and bus tickets from Rome2Rio?
good luck
if their tickets are as wildly incorrect as their travel information goodness only know what you'll get and where you will wind up.
People use it somewhat successfully as a broad overview - but for travel details, no way - and actual tickets based on those loopy instructions, oh my!
Use the company that runs the trains (or buses) to get the tickets. And for reasonable and existing routes.
I’ve looked at transportation option suggestions on Rome2Rio, but for a train ticket App, I like the Trainline app.
Rome2Rio appears to book through Omio- yet another third (or fourth) party.
R2R information is notoriously partial, imprecise and incorrect.
You are not going to get the full range of transport options and be paying commission to do something you can do directly on the relevant transport companies websites direct.
Booking like this you are so far removed from the actual provider. When things change (such as the recent flooding that heavily affected Austrian trains) who is going to inform you about service updates? But even on a day to day basis events happen- services are changed or cancelled.
That is why you always book direct.
I use Rome2Rio as a first point when looking at travel options, then go to the specific bus or train line to confirm that it's accurate. I order tickets directly from the train or bus line, although I'm about to order train tickets for Spain and have read it's often better to get them though Trainline since the Renfe sight can be challenging.
I use the Renfe app and I have an account with Renfe. Not challenging at all, plus my tickets are stored in my account making it easy to access and manage.
Are you traveling in more than one country? It's usually best to go with a country's public transport app if possible. For example, in Germany, use https://int.bahn.de/en. In Austria, use https://www.oebb.at/en/. The Netherlands is https://www.nsinternational.com/en. The UK has quite a few train lines, but you can go to https://www.nationalrail.co.uk to see them all. Italy is https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html and you can find French trains at https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en.
I could keep going, but really, I would strongly suggest you visit The Man in Seat 61 for information on train and bus travel throughout Europe. It has a wealth of information, is easy to use and you can find information specific to each country, if needed.
My opinion is that all travel tickets should be bought directly from the operator do not insert a middleman
go to the website and buy directly. It will save you a lot of grief if anything changes.
Buy direct from the company operating the trains and buses.
I use Rome2Rio to get a generalization of what is available and to find out who is operating the chosen transportation option. Then I go to that company's website to get correct information and to buy tickets. Or I might use the company's app.
sg,
I also use Rome-2-Rio as a general guide to find out what transportation options are from one location to another. Once I decide on a method, I use the carrier's website for specific information. I don't buy tickets from R-2-R!
If you want a "one stop shopping" option for rail tickets in Europe, you might have a look at Trainline - https://www.thetrainline.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20121110635&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpNuRjcuKiQMV8C2tBh309TXhEAAYASAAEgLF0PD_BwE .
Once you've registered on their site, I've found that buying tickets is quite easy, and in my experience their customer service has been good. Of course for maximum benefit, travelling with a smart phone and a data plan is a good idea.
Everything that Ken said above. R2R is good for getting a general idea of what the options are from one place to another. But book directly with the transportation company you decide to use, or via Trainline - which is also a 3rd party but the upcharge is minimal and the site is easy to use and reliable.
I use Rome2Rio quite a bit to get a general idea of options that might be possible, whether flights, trains, buses or in cities what a taxi might cost. Then I book directly once I have found the connections that make the most sense.
