Hi,
Please bear with me as this is my first post.
I am traveling to Europe this May, starting in Rome and heading up to Munich, but I have not figured out how to travel from Rome to Munich yet. I would like to take a train and stop at some cities along the way, but am not well aquainted with Italy. Any idea's for what I could see and stop for? Initally I was hoping to stop in Florence for the day, stay at a Monastery, and then leave the next morning and stop again in Innsbruck (or another city).
Please let me know if you have any ideas!
Also, which trian companies are the best?
List of places between Rome and Munich (with only minor detours): Florence, Venice, other North Italian cities, Dolomites, Innsbruck, Salzburg. Possibly even Vienna, though that is a bit "off route"
How many nights have you got for this tour?
As to trains, You don't usually have a choice of train companies, it is in most cases just the one national train company in each country, plus smaller local companies and sometimes, but rarely, competitors on some routes.
Trenitalia = Italian Railways: https://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Plus https://www.italotreno.it/en which competes on some long-distance routes.
ÖBB = Austrian Railways
DB = German Railways https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml
For more information about how the trains operate, were to get info and buy tickets etc. Read this webpage: https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Rome.htm#Rome-Germany

And the rest of that website.
Stephen.hill12 this is a trip filled with many wonderful options! I am sure you will get good advice here from the many experienced travellers that participate in this forum. I am going to throw several options out there that follow the path from Rome to Munich but your interests and time constraints will help you prioritize. How much time do you have for the trip? If you have time to linger then it will be hard to narrow down. If your time is short then prioritize. It is that prioritizing and the need to be selective that is so hard to do. But just tell yourself that you are saving the others for a future trip. This past April I travelled by train and bus from Ferrara, Italy to Munich, after having spent three weeks in northern Italy. Very easily done. Service is frequent. If I were coming from Rome I personally would consider a stop in Orvieto or Assisi or Arezzo. Those places are on my radar but I haven't gotten there yet. If you have never been to Florence then one night is not enough. Verona, also on the path, is a great place to stop, a very worthy destination with lots to see. We stopped in Trento for two nights and I liked it very much. Bolzano, Bressanone and Vipiteno also caught my attention because I like picturesque smaller cities and towns but I had always wanted to go to Trento so we chose to go there. From Trento we took the train to Innsbruck. From Innsbruck we took a bus up to Garmisch and stayed there a week. It was my second visit to the Garmisch Partenkirchen area which I think is very beautiful with lots of things to do nearby. From Garmisch we took a bus to Munich and flew out of Munich. I used the Trenitalia website for planning our rail travel and we took the FLIX bus twice. We only used public transportation.
I will be staying in Europe until the 29th, but leaving the Munich area around the 25th. I am actually staying in Regensburg for most of my stay because I have family there.
Regarding my journey from Italy to Munich, I am open to anything. I am traveling by myself, and meeting with friends later. I would like to spend 2-3 days traveling from Rome to Munich. Additionally, I would prefer to stay at Monasteries if possible.
Thanks for the help!
