We will be travelling to Amsterdam after the Rick Steves tour ends in Rome in May. Any suggestions on which route to take would be welcome. Should we book ahead?
If you book the Milano-Amsterdam night train far enough in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de, you can get SparNight discount fares for bunks in couchettes and beds in sleepers. Buy your Roma-Milano tickets when you get to Rome. If any of the allotted seats are still available, you can get Amica fares (20% off) for tickets purchased up to 24 hours before departure.
There is a new night train service between Milan and Amsterdam (15 hour journey). Milan is about four hours away from Rome. You could take an evening train from Rome to Milan, spend a day sightseeing and sleep all the way to Amsterdam. All night trains should be booked ahead: http://tinyurl.com/3albgx
Thanks so much, we'll look into it.
