My husband and I are going to Rome and are planning on going to Vatican City. However, we do not want to be in Vatican city during a papal audience (d/t to crowds), which as I understand occurs on Wednesday's and Sunday's. Does anyone know if there are papal ceremonies in July? I have been checking the Vatican website daily, but they have not posted the schedule for July.
Do not avoid Rome just because of a "going on" at the Vatican! Rome is a big city! I was there at Easter, and you wouldn't have known it unless you were inside Vatican City. Got on a train "Easter Monday" which is a Holiday in Italy (and most of Europe) and didn't even need a reserved seat. Enjoy Rome, it doesn't really matter, unless you want to stay at a hotel in close proximity of the Vatican, and there aren't that many.
If you are going to Rome in July it will be very hot, humid, and super crowded. Other than being inside the Vatican during an audience, you will not notice any difference when an audience is held or not. The really only two conditions in Rome - crowded and very crowded. Also, it is obvious when a audience is scheduled if you walking into the Vatican area. There will be barricades, huge TV screens, and more security. So just turn around and walk away.
As other have said, do not worry, go. The only thing I would avoid is trying to visit St Peters on a Wed. or Sunday morning. Plenty of other things to see during those slots.
Go, go, go! By the way, Popes have traditionally resided outside of the city at Castle Gandolfo in July and August. Benedict has been living differently, but might still take that chance to escape the city in summer.
@Laura, I think you meant "Francesco." :-)
