Considering booking a Viking Danube River Cruise -- specifically the Romantic Danube. For folks who may have taken this cruise or planning to, any suggestions as to whether it is better to go Budapest to Regensburg or vice versa? Many thanks.

We completed a wonderful Gate 1 Travel Danube cruise from Regensburg to Budapest (then a 6 day bus tour of Romania).
It was great, but I can't see that it matters. You could compare the itineraries, but you are likely to see all the sites at about the same times on site.
Only thing would be do you want to fly in to Budapest first or Munich. We had a direct flight into Munich from Atlanta, but since we did a bus tour of Romania after, he had to connect in Amsterdam, for a longer flight home.
One thing, we have taken several river cruises and I always compare prices and itineraries on Viking, Gate 1, AMA Waterways and others. Gate 1 beats them all in price, by far. Our Egypt Nile cruise and tour was about 60% of the price for Viking.
The Gate 1 boat we were on was fairly new and very nice.

I recently did the Viking Danube Waltz cruise from Budapest to Passau. I guess which direction you go depends on where you want to fly into/out of (which would be Munich or Budapest, unless you plan for a pre- or post-cruise extension in another city). We spent a long weekend in Budapest before boarding, and then two days in Munich after disembarking. We did not use Viking Air or their transfers; we arranged those ourselves.
Also, if you have a preference for a level of cabin and there are several sailings in both directions, you could check and see if a particular sailing has the cabin you want available and make your decision that way.
