Romania 14 days, where to stay?

  • Late September or late May
  • Open Jaws Bucharest -> Budapest so we need to end up at an airport or Train station city Bucket list items include Bran/ Corvin/ Painted monasteries/ Transfagarasan and maybe Transraraul roads, Salina Turda, Medieval villages, rural life, scenic drives.

We are planning 2 days in Bucharest. My overarching question is how do we break up the remaining 12 overnights between Brasov, Sibiu, Gura Humolurlui, Sighisoara/ Other random small villages? We don't want to waste time packing and moving around but we want waste time backtracking too much on such a short trip.

And what's the best order of things? Bucharest, train to Brasov, pick up car there seems pretty straight forward. But after that, do we go up to the Bucovina area to see the monasteries/ rural life, looping back through a random village, then Turda-Sighisoara ending in Sibiu for the outbound to Budapest? Do we use Cluj Napoca as our outbound and maybe overnight there? Do we include a northern drive up to the Merry Cemetery, ending up in Oradea for a train to Budapest instead of a flight? Would that be a lot of wasted driving or would that part of Transylvania be a really cool for an overnight?

I've been to Romania several times, but that doesnt make me expert enough to be much help. If it were me and I had what appears to be your interests, then if I didnt actually hire these guys to do the trip, I would steal their plan and personalize it a bit, then fly to Budpaest from Bucharest (done that a number of times ... easy): https://covinnus.com/tours/shared-tours/best-countryside-romania-tour/

Oh, I know those guys, traveled with them twice. An outstanding, but not so much cheap anymore, guide. But you get what you pay for.

Know that driving speeds and roads will be at about an overall miles per hour of about 30. Roads are very winding and passes through villages where you will slow down. So time between destinations will be slower than you may realize. Consider that for your timeframe.
I would recommend Turda gorge as a nice hike, especially if you come back over the top where the views are. But go early. We stayed in Cluj-Napoca and this had to driver further to the gorge and back. I would definitely have preferred to stay in Turda. Cluj is alright, but really nothing special you can’t see in other places.
On your post I think you posted Budapest several times when you meant Bucharest?

@MrE Yeah have see your previous mention of them. I did look at their pages quite a bit, but yeah €500/day is just not in my budget. We will likely use “day” guides

@treemoss I probably wasn’t really clear but we are flying USA->Bucharest, touring Romania and then going to Budapest Hungary for 3-4 days before flying Budapest->USA

Thats fine, dont blame you. The prices are what happens when you end up in the RS guide book. But steal the program and customize it a bit. It's a good starting point.
