I need help!
A year ago I mapped out a roadtrip starting and ending in Frankfurt, which included lots of castles, Salzburg, the romantic road, and a spa day in Baden Baden. We leave in two weeks and I am having second thoughts about whether a 10 year anniversary filled with castles and cuckoo clocks is really what we want. So, I would like to add in two or three nights in Amsterdam. The only details we cannot change are our flights in and out of Frankfurt arriving October 14 and departing October 29th (15 nights). We were going to Rent-A-Car and drive the entire thing, but we can swap that for train travel or flights as well or do a combination. So I’m looking for a dream itinerary for a couple that starts and ends in Frankfurt and includes Amsterdam. I am thinking of keeping our first hotel reservation which is three nights in Boppard to adjust to the jet lag, but honestly I’m open to anything!

You could remove Salzburg and add Amsterdam to the itinerary as follows: drive from Frankfurt to Munich according to what probably was your original plan in 10 days, drop car in Munich, fly to Amsterdam, spend three nights there, and take the train to Frankfurt for a final night.
Or you could optimize it a little: as you arrive, don't go to Boppard, but head to Baden Baden instead: what's better than a spa day to beat jet lag? Then make your way to the romantic road and Munich as planned, fly to Amsterdam, and take the train from Amsterdam to Boppard. Unless your flight is very early, a train from Boppard to Frankfurt airport on the morning of said flight is feasible, and you save the need for a final night in Frankfurt.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. Our original itinerary has us going from Frankfurt straight to Boppard for 3 nights by train, picking up a car in Koblenz and spending 2 nights in Cochem, then overnight in Baden-Baden before driving to Tubingen for 2 nights, Fussen one night, then 3 nights in Salzburg, 2 in Rothenburg-ab-T, and a final night in Frankfurt to catch an early flight. I’m a little exhausted thinking about it. I was thinking we would go ahead and start with our three nights in Boppard, then drive (train?) Over to Amsterdam for three or four nights. I know the Amsterdam marathon is on October 20 and I don’t know how disruptive that is so that’s part of the deciding factor on whether we check out on the 20th or 21st and move on. From there I am trying to figure out how to slowly make our way back to Frankfurt for our departure on the 29th: Drive to Bruges for a couple of nights maybe and then… where?
