We are seniors and wondering if anyone has taken a river cruise in Eastern Europe. Did you feel safe?
We did a Danube cruise from Regensburg, Germany to Budapest, then a six day bus tour of Romania.
Both were wonderful, had no concerns about safety. You are probably safer in those counties than most US big cities.
Safe? So many ways to define that. I am sure that each of these is flawed. But there is consistency in one thing; Eastern/Central Europe does very, very well compared to a lot of the traditional Western European destinations.

I did a great trip last summer with Gate1 on the Danube. Started with a pre-cruise extension in Prague. Then went to Regensburg for a 7 day cruise down the Danube to Budapest. This was followed by a great 6 day land tour extension through Romania. Many just did the seven day cruise. There was never a time I felt unsafe in any way.
In September we took a river cruise on Grand Circle from "Bucharest to Budapest." It was very nice. Yes, we felt totally safe. Never once did we feel even remotely unsafe. I am wondering, why do you ask?
I think its a good question. Why wouldnt you if you are learning about a new place in the world.
But I am not sure this is the right place to find the answer.
By Eastern Europe, I think you might actually mean Central Europe? Can you please share what countries you would visit on this river cruise?
As for safety, I think all boats are equipped with life jackets, life boats and emergency instructions are clearly indicated. I think it is hard to fall off of a river boat and, even if that happens, the water isn't too deep nor do the boats move that fast.
We’ve traveled by river cruise and independently all through Central Europe…all the way to Romania over the last few years. Lovely people and interesting cities with lots of history. Always felt safe. Like all travel, you need to use common sense regarding your safety and scammers. Definitely take your trip. It tends to be more affordable than Western Europe…. now is the time to explore this area. Ps. We are well over seventy, so age is not an issue.
Emily is absolutely correct, its been years since a river boat sank.
Ohhhh, Eastern Europe or Central Europe? The most common definition of Central Europe by those other than Romanians and Bulgarians is that it is comprised of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Some like this one throw in the Baltic States and Croatia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe#/media/File:Grossgliederung_Europas-en.svg . Only a very few show Romania and Bulgaria and fewer yet the Balkans. Those tend to be called Southeastern Europe.
You will probably be safer, statistically speaking, on a European river cruise boat than you would spending that time at home, wherever that may be.
Although I did hear about a passenger one time who fell off a cruise boat in Egypt. He was so embarrassed that he was in de Nile.
