Rick Steves Nightmare

So I've been waiting longer than any time I can recall for an upcoming vacation, my solo RS tour to Greece in the spring... I haven't been on a tour in decades. I do love traveling alone or with my loved ones. I'm excited, but a little leery...especially as there is one forum poster who clearly didn't like the people or the RS tour. Anyway, the other night I had a Rick Steves nightmare, (yes, literally...fooled you!): In my nightmare, I checked into the hotel and brought my suitcase to my room to discover 10 beds squeezed into the room. I left my bag. I thought something was wrong. I then searched and searched for my tour group. I couldn't find them anywhere. Eventually, I returned to my room and found the beds filled with tour members...but they did not speak to me at all. I was invisible to them! LOL.

What do you think...should I give up the forum for 4 months? ...Am I losing it? Any psycho babble for me? Oh, btw, I paid for the single supplement...

Just kind of funny...Wray

I think you need to find a good bottle of wine somewhere and share it with a friend. Just like the election - This too shall pass. Just relax. We do cruises fairly frequently and that gets rip on in a major way on this site. Does it bother us ?? Not one bit. Because we are very comfortable with what we do and how we do it. To enjoy our trips, I do not need anyone's approval.

That definitely sounds like an anxiety dream...take it easy. These tours are easy peasy and they select for people with certain characteristics (call 'em RS values or what-not). I've only been on one but everyone on the tour was great. I didn't even get a single supplement...it was very low risk as far as I saw it. Everybody was super friendly and welcoming.

@Frank, "This too shall pass" is a family motto. LOL. I shall do as you recommend...tonight! A glass of wine and a creme brûlée as we wait for tonight's results...and I wait the tour!

@Agnes, Yes, I was surprised at the dream. I'm pretty low key and generally very comfortable with myself and people so I can't imagine I wouldn't like at least 98% of the people. How did your non-single supplement work out?

I had two really cool roommates and they were rotated every day (that's the RS policy so no one gets stuck with a potentially incompatible person for the entire time). I had my own room at least 1/3rd of the time (more than 3 nights). Both roommates were nice, fun, and very respectful. And luckily did not snore :-) I did end up sleeping less some nights because we talked and laughed but that's OK. It was worth it.

Sounds like a nightmare mash-up in the loft dormitory at Hotel Mittaghorn. Rather than one glass of wine, I'd suggest two generous glasses and watch some of Rick's videos. Posting a trip report upon concluding your fantastic tour is now mandatory.

Wray,
So funny! I just returned from the RS Best of Italy in 17 Days tour and paid the single supplement. I was the only single...so I'm thinking maybe next time I will take a chance on a roommate I do not know as they will probably be nice and accommodating as others have said. There were 19 tour members in our group and I liked everyone. We bonded by Venice and had a fantastic time together! This was my 3rd RS tour and I am a fan. I agree the people are self-selecting, friendly, and flexible. The "no-grumps" policy really works to weed out those who are high maintenance.

Re: the election - yes, I will watch the results with a glass of wine and talk to my like-minded friends about the incoming results.

Thanks for sharing your nightmare,
Judy B

Thank you for the good laugh this morning! Yes, Wray, now we will all want to hear if this "nightmare" actually comes true :)....No worries, it won't, I promise! With a good many RS tours under my belt, I can attest to the fact that you will meet some of the most interesting and fun people, and no, you will not get the cold shoulder or be ignored! I have heard of a couple of tours with shared baths but never bedrooms for 10! I have been on that tour and will also stick my neck out by saying you're really, really going to enjoy it. Go enjoy that bottle of wine.......

"Oh, btw, I paid for the single supplement... "

Okay now that explains a lot ;-)

Wray, in your dream, was there also ten small sinks with ten weary travelers washing their garments?

Dear Wray,

I think dreams are advises from angels and your nightmare means you should NOT go in that tour, instead you should offer the tour with all expenses paid end even some extra bonus to someone here in this forum. But... to who? Well, nightmare was in a hotel, so to someone whose name starts with an H... also you say 10 beds, so if one would be yours, there are 9 left. I'm thinking you should find someone whose surname (or name? Never know which is which, but I mean last name, not christian name) has 9 letters... Besides that, your room mates did not talk to you, that means you must find someone who speaks a completely diferent language, one you could not understand... like chinese or PORTUGUESE.

What do you say?

Wray, definitely an anxiety dream! I have them before major events, sometimes.

I have never been on a tour, but I can tell you that all of the RS tour members I have run into (and there have been dozens) in their free time are happy, friendly, and I cannot imagine them ignoring a fellow group member (or a fellow human being, for that matter).

So, your nightmare is out of the way, and now you can look forward to your trip!!

You are totally normal! New adventures can be scary. I was very worried about traveling to Italy--Mafia, street crime, foreign language, everything strange...... I went, spending a few days alone before the tour and survived just fine. In your single room you will be "protected" from the hordes of tour members. Mostly the RS tours are made up of easy-going congenial people. I've been on 8 RS tours so I know.

I've been on two RS tours and I really enjoyed all of the people in both groups. The second tour was longer than the first (14 versus 10 days), and there were tears shed at our last dinner together!

Having said that, I will admit to being shy and reserved. I had some anxiety about meeting the tour group before both tours started. I did have to put in some effort to appear outgoing for the first couple of days but then I was very happy to have new friends. One of the things I really enjoy about RS tours is running across other tours members during free time.

I think you will have an amazing time in Greece and I hope you share your experiences here when you return.

LOL. You are all so funny...and comforting! And I didn't know I was anxious but I'm usually the last to know... So keep making me laugh, I suggest selfishly.

Besides who could I find who's name begins with H and with a 9 letter last name speaking Portuguese...? ;) So I think I'll just have to push on and have a great time!

Heck with the glass of wine...once the bottle is open...

You will have a great time for sure as you clearly have a sense of humor!

Secretly...I would love to travel alone...just don't tell my husband!

Christi, My husband traveled a lot before I retired as he's a few years older than I am. He really enjoyed traveling alone so he has encouraged me to do the same now that he's less interested...(but then he worries about me but that's a different story). There must be a way to entice your husband somewhere else while you venture out? LOL. Wray

I attribute your nightmare to the election. Once it is over, everything should be ok unless a certain person becomes President (notice I am not referring to a particular candidate). If my candidate loses, I might begin to have nightmares as well.

Wray!!! Oh my word...that is the kind of dream I would have. I would also realize that I was either running around in my underwear or PJs and had lost my luggage. I will swear to you that in 8 tours, all single supplements, I was never in a 10-bed dorm, hahaha. I love the picture of 10 little sinks with RS folks furiously washing out clothes. One of them would be me!

My experience is also the same as Rita's * One of the things I really enjoy about RS tours is running across other tours members during free time.* I think it is so funny that you will just randomly see other tour members when you are out on your free time, even in a huge city. Also, if you stay after the tour you may run in to them. When I did Paris and Heart of France last year I stayed a few days extra. I ran in to 2 different sets of tour members at various museums AND ran in to the guide in the Latin Quarter! So funny!

Thanks for sharing this with us....

Wray,

As I read the description of the dream. into my mind popped the following addition to the dream:

When you woke up in your room of 10, "Mr. Pack Light" (we all know who that is from the Forum), was ripping apart your carry-on suitcase and demanding that you explain WHY you had to pack each and every single item. He then proceeded to show you the 9"x12" inch envelope he used for packing ALL his travel belongings!!!!

But, all your fellow Rickster tour goers quickly came to your defense...........and then you all toured Happily Ever After!!!!

I agree Election stress likely caused the dream.

Life is short, don't use a 9/12 envelope for packing :)

Love Greece...have a wonderful time, and enjoy having your own room!!

Absolutely ..... Life is short, don't use a 9/12 envelope for packing...... especially when you can get by with a 5/7.

Wray, thanks SO much for this post and Pam, thanks for the link. I needed a chuckle this week and this hit the spot. Actually, thanks, Everyone!!
I have decided to be a rebel and use my RS roller for our next tour--not a 9/12 or 5/7 envelope...thank you very much!

I thought you were going to say the current election results were Rick's nightmare... (this at 6:45 pm PT...it's still too close to call but a very nervous time for Rick's preferred outcome right now, I can assure you). Financial markets around the world are dropping in reaction (similar patterns to the day after Brexit).

I actually hung out with Rick Steves for a while 8 years ago at an Obama victory party in Seattle on election night as the results came in. Maybe I'll head down there later, but it's going to be a longer night than I was expecting...

Oh Wray, I am so sorry about your nightmare. I think there is an odd tension in the air these days. Is it the strange fall weather we're having, the change in daylight or turning on the T.V. ? Whatever...

We have done 3 RS tours, one of which was the tour of Greece. Trip of a lifetime. I was sorry to see the one poster that didn't seem to love it. . These tour have some of Rick's best guides and our guide made a subtle, but effective, effort to bring us together as a group. It was our longest RS tour and we've become convinced that longer ones are the best because we did become cohesive. On Our recent 8 day tour we were just getting comfortable with each other and it was over. Most RS travelers are pretty self-sufficient, which I think makes them easy to travel with. We've stayed in contact with some from that trip and even travel with one couple. We don't keep in daily contact, but when it's time to travel we enjoy their company and their travel style.

I hope you get to see the wildflowers in the Spring!

Hey, looking on the bright side: Trump's gonna fix up La Guardia so it's as nice as Dubai's airport!

and Elon Musk will surely have no trouble recruiting all the volunteers needed for that one-way Mars mission...

Mrs EB, I agree traveling alone means no tour group, and boy is that fun! However, I am traveling solo within the group and surrounded by people so that will be different for me. I'm sure it will be fine. I'm social, but also like my alone time which I think I can get if there aren't 10 other people in my room (and doing hand laundry in 10 sinks)! RS tour is going to get me to places that I believe would be a real hassle to get to...I'm looking forward to it and the information that I've likely forgotten over the last 40 years, but as the dream reflects, I have my reservations...

David, One way ticket to where is the issue, but Laguardia does need an overhaul so I'm all for that. And I'm a New Englander through and through (except for my Swedish grandmother's line...) so I wouldn't really want to leave...three signers of the declaration of independence, eleven relatives in the battle of Lexington and Concord, at least one at Valley Forge, one grandfather in congress for decades, many decades ago, etc. This is my land and no one will drive me out...but I can cry a bit. Sorry, was that political? Or just history? Or did I share too much? Maybe I'll be deleted...maybe I have been deleted... ;)

Traveling alone means solo on the trip, no tour, no travel partner/ person being around. Ten beds "squeezed into the room" reminds me of having stayed in those hostel rooms with five bunks.

Posted by

Wray, LOL! The 10 beds in one room reminds me of a hostel, also.

My nightmare I have from time to time is of standing in a tube station in London, having just gotten off the tube from Heathrow. I am faced with a long escalator I must go up. The problem is, I have 3 suitcases with me that are each 5 1/2 feet tall, and about 4 feet wide. They are charcoal gray, hard-sided roller bags, and the same 3 bags appear every time I dream this. It's like being surrounded by a mini-Stonehenge.

LOL! I guess I have watched one too many Rick Steves "traveling light" videos on YouTube before going to bed at night!!!

Wray,

Don't be too concerned about taking the RS Greece tour as a solo traveller. I did that a few years ago, and was fortunate to get a good group and a wonderful guide, so it was one of the best tours I've taken. I found that there was a good mix of "solo time" as well as group time so I still had the freedom to get away and do some exploring on my own. After the tour ended, I headed for Naxos and Santorini on my own, which made for a wonderful visit to Greece.

As you noted earlier, one of the reasons I decided on a tour for Greece was that it covered a large area in a very efficient manner. The fact that I didn't have to worry about transportation and hotels was a bonus. In my experience, you'll learn more about the history of the places you'll be visiting with a tour, so it will be a more interesting travel experience. Of course, being on a tour means that some compromises will be necessary, such as being ready to go at the appointed time when the Bus is leaving.

Unfortunately I can't provide any advice to help with your travel nightmare or for some of you, your political nightmare.

Good luck!

Wray, I usually travel with a carry-on only! Next time we may do a cruise over to England, so we will have to take a couple of large suitcases of dressy clothes. I think that's why the huge suitcases are re-appearing in my dreams! That and a disguised anxiety dream about the election.

Wray, your dream brought back memories of an experience in Austria in the 80s. I checked into a naturfreundehaus (similar to a hostel) about midday and was assigned a bunk in a room with 12 bunk beds (24 beds). I returned later that evening expecting the dorm to be full. Instead, I was the only person in the huge room. It was kind of creepy sleeping in this huge room with all these empty beds.

Wray - I'd offer to give you moral support and comfort on the tour but sadly your tour is a month before mine.

Mrs EB - why do you think single supplement is a punishment? It's the differential between the price of a single room and half the price of a double room. You pay that in just about every room you stay in whether you're with a group or on your own. And unlike when you're on your own, you can choose to share a room on an RS tour and not pay the supplement, even if you don't have a roommate for part or all of the tour.

PS - just got my $100 credit and can't wait to buy the guide book and start reading.

Unless you are cruising Cunard the dress code has become pretty casual for most cruise lines - suits are not even necessary. We cruise in carry-on only with no problem. Again - no one cares if you wear the same thing twice!

If we do this, we will be cruising Cunard. The dress code is rather dressy. Formal wear at times. Casual during the day.

TC, I may indeed be curious about your packing list! Thanks!

Christi, we will definitely be wearing the same thing twice on the cruise!

Wray, you and I need to talk about cruises and share "sale" information, etc. I get sale alerts from Cunard all the time. When we were in England in May 2016, we met another couple from the U.S. who had sailed to England on a re-positioning cruise. They got a great deal.

Rebecca, The cruise I'm interested in is a transpositioning (?) cruise like I assume you are taking, but I've never taken a cruise before so I'd hate to find out I get seasick! Isn't there an option of going to more casual restaurants?...I'm not a dress up kind of girl, unless its a pant suit (I'll get over it, eventually, bear with me). Yes, I'd like your information though...Wray

Rebecca & Wray......
Make it easy, seriously just pack carry-on....you can do it. We've done it many times.

For the dressy nights, here's the trick:
Ankle-length black knit skirt and a plain black top (long-sleeve light t-shirt if summer, heavier t-shirt or dress sweater if winter/spring/or chilly evening weather). Take a choker of pearls and then a princess length of pearls, and take 2-3 dressy shawls (some of which can also flip to scarves). Plain black ballet flats, and you are pretty much set for even a black-tie evening :) Have done it many times!!! It works. Black is black, knits are wrinkle-free....splash of color with the shawls (use a very, very light-weight one for summer).

For men, it's a bit trickier. Most cruise lines that still do the formal nights (although many have now dropped them) have black-tie optional. If your guys want to do the tux bit, the biggest pain is lugging those darn dress shoes for men. But, with a sports coat and trousers, the second pair of loafers can work for semi-formalish nights. For lugging a tie, what I have found works best for packing is to roll the tie in a half sheet of tissue paper (using the tissue paper for the point part that actually shows) then putting that in a round plastic tupperware-like container (certain size small sour cream/yogurt containers also work great)......perfect, no smooshed or wrinkled tie. Or, if your guys are comfortable with a bow tie, that's even easier.

But, Wray, you are right, normally there are dining venues that offer the non-formal option (or there is always room service) for those who don't want to lug the tux stuff. On our last Silversea cruise, on formal night, we arranged for our butler to serve us dinner (with the couple with whom we were traveling, along with the Global Perspectives speaker) in the lounge right up in front of the ship with huge windows, while we sailed out of St. Petersburg. We timed it for 20 minutes after all the pre-dinner guests had cleared out, and we had the most wonderful, quiet, lovely dinner and the on-board speaker was fascinating one-on-one., pointing out sights to us that no one else knew to look for that night (since they were all in the main dining room or elsewhere on formal night). Sometimes those special set-ups are available just for the asking ;)

No one else will remember what you wore.

Posted by
3793 posts

Margaret, thank you for your wonderful suggestions! Love the "little black dress" ensemble that always works! Add a scarf/shawl and a string of pearls.......pure Audrey Hepburn simple elegance!

So glad you had a great cruise! It sounds fabulous, especially the private dinner.

Wray, there are indeed lots of options on board the Cunard ship. I was just exploring here:
http://www.cunard.com/cruise-ships/queen-mary-2/dining-bars-lounges/
The Red Lion Pub looks like a good option for those who don't want to wear the tux for dinner.

Also see "King's Court Buffet, Deck 7":
http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=294&pgtype=dining

Wray, I think there is very little chance you will get seasick. The larger the ship you are traveling on, the more stabile they are in the water. If you choose a cabin in the center of the ship, you will probably not notice any rocking or rolling. It's been my experience that that is more noticeable either at the front or the back of the ship. About the re-positioning cruises; I am sending you a PM.

Pantsuits are fine for dress-up dinners, I think.

Posted by
2115 posts

Rebecca (and Wray),
Yep, post cruises, my husband actually sort of plays the role of the butler and brings me orange juice in bed, etc. or peels the wrapper off my bran muffin for a few days........just to jokingly wean me from the butler service on the oh-so-short good life on a 7-14 day cruise. If we had such luxury at home, it would not be special on vacation :) The crew has sometimes commented to me that they can tell who really appreciates the extras and those who just take them for granted, and those people they tell me are so much harder to please. Actually on the ships that offer a butler, most of us giggle that we just don't know what to do with a butler (we were not trained as kids....LOL). (Having shoes shined after a dusty day touring and getting early a.m. room service before heading out for an early shore excursion is an nice little extra, though, on some ships).
And, Rebecca, right you are about center of ship for more stability. We usually go with an inexpensive window-only (no balcony) suite on the main level. Once you are on the ship, everything else is the same, so we just save the $s and go w/ main deck/as close to center as possible with a window.

Posted by
3793 posts

Margaret, good advice! I agree about the lower priced rooms on a cruise being a good choice. You really aren't going to spend that much time in there. There are so many other things to do on the ship.
