Rick Steves Guidebooks (on Kindle) deeply discounted at Amazon

For a limited time, many of the RS guidebooks are on sale for as low as $1.99 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rick+steves&i=digital-text&rh=n%3A154606011&s=price-asc-rank&qid=1650282334&ref=sr_st_price-asc-rank -

Most of them were published in 2019 and 2020, and I imagine that they are clearing the way for new ones to be published this year sometime but if you use Kindle guidebooks, it's a great deal!

Thank you! I've just added the Paris 2019 guidebook to all my Kindle options. I'm waiting for the Paris 2022 edition since we will be in Paris in October, but in a pinch, this will be fun to read and WHAT A PRICE! We already have our lodging so we won't need recommendations of lodgings which may have been discontinued/suspended due to the pandemic which happened in 2020 possibly making lodging and dining options obsolete.

thanks for the headsup and the direct link! I have picked up some of these on sales in the past but there is more now.

I just got back from Paris and found that a 2017 RS Paris Kindle guidebook on my phone was handy when going around the city as a quick reference. I have later editions in print but found the Kindle version useful at the Louvre, Orsay, and Pere Lachaise via my iPhone.

Thanks so much for the link! Now I have no excuse not to start diving into languages for an upcoming trip.

There are (still? again?) Rick Steves Kindle editions on sale on Amazon, perhaps some that were not on sale previously, I'm not sure. I just picked up 3: Rick Steves Pocket Paris ($1.99 regularly $13.99) and Rick Steves Budapest ($3.99 regularly $21.99) and Rick Steves Eastern Europe ($4.99 regularly $29.99.)

I already have some of these in hard copy, but it's convenient to have them on my tablet. You never know when you'll be on one trip and feel the need to start researching another :-)

CWsocial, that is so true! I'm in the middle of my Germany trip, but met a woman from Scotland at Berg Eltz castle the other day and I've decided that Scotland will be my next trip. I've always wanted to go - I've been to England and Wales, but not Scotland. For some reason, I kept putting it on the back burner, but no more!

So I need to start researching that in my spare time. :)

oh Mardee, that was a lot of temptation to put in front of a travel junkie.......
Thanks for the heads up. I have some reading to do........

And this should be obvious but keep in mind, guidebook listings for hotels and restaurants can't be fully trusted in this COVID era. Verify everything.

But for things like Pere Lachaise, I can pretty much guarantee Edith Piaf and Jim Morrison haven't moved. They did have to encase Oscar Wilde's tombstone in Lucite, however.

His Ireland book is down to $1.99. I saw that the Scotland book was at $3.99, but I'll be honest (cover your eyes, Webmaster, if you're reading this) I do not like his Scotland book. I got it from the library and it's missing half of the places I'm going! It's a little too curated if you ask me.

Rick will come right out and tell you, his guidebooks are not encyclopedias. He definitely picks and chooses. for instance, he didn't use to cover Geneva in his Switzerland book (perhaps that has changed), I thought I bought the outlet store version.

But that is where the F twins Fodors and Frommers step in.

I do realize that and I understand why he does it. I just don't always like it. :) I'm not fond of the F twins that much either - I tend to go for the Lonely and Rough guys.

Mardee, this part of your post gave me a good chuckle. So fun taken out of context.

โ€œWhen Mardee gives shopping suggestions, I listen.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚. Just bought the Naples and Amalfi coast kindle edition. Thanks. Seems I bought something else you mentioned months ago, but canโ€™t remember.

I just purchased several. Our next trip just might be Spain, Poland, or the Amalfi Coast!

Another thanks for this heads up.

I was able to lighten my paper load for Ireland even more (50 pages, 100 if you count both sides) by getting the Kindle Snapshot Dublin book. I kept the maps I'd already marked because they're easier to see than in the digital version, and because I'd already circled the points of interest for my time before the tour starts.

I don't remember if this was the case in the Kindle version of one guidebook I got years ago and hated, but one thing I love is that there are hot links embedded in the text. Very convenient.

Lo, I'm not sure when they started but when I took my 2018 trip to the Netherlands and Belgium, I was very pleasantly surprised to find those hotlinks. They are so helpful!

Carol (retired), glad you got that (although I was thinking I sound a little masochistic). :)

Carol, if there's one thing I know how to do, it's spend money. :)

MNAnnie, oh wow! That will be incredible! I love Spain, but have never been to Poland or the Amalfi Coast. Can't wait to see what you decide!

Mardee, based on my experience in December, the Frommers guide to Paris was just as good as Rick's and was a useful complement. I never use just one book. I started traveling to Europe back in the '80s so the F twins mean a lot to me.

phred, I should not have disparaged the F twins. I've used them before myself. I do prefer Rough Guides and especially Lonely Planet, mainly because when I first started traveling, I was on a much tighter budget and those seemed to have places that were cheaper. However, Lonely Planet now runs the gamut from cheap to $500 a night so I'm not sure that's applicable anymore. I do like their descriptions though.

In fact, I will admit that I have the Frommer's Scotland book sitting in front of me. In my defense, i got it from the library but it's been a nice read.

I'm not sure that there is a perfect guidebook - I guess that's why we buy so many of them. :)

On my last couple of trips to new places, I used both RS and Lonely Planet. I like the detail in the RS books, especially the self-guided tours. LP has much better overall coverage and it was more useful for restaurants and bars during the trip.

I use the ebooks on my computer when I'm planning so I can print out bits that will be useful, like maps and those walking tours. The print-outs are easier manage than a phone. My Kindle is B&W so highlighting and color maps don't show up, plus not using it means one less thing to shlep around during the day.

Thanks. Meeting friends in Barcelona next week for a few days, so shared the info. I still have the 2016 version on my iPad.

Chani, that's a good idea. What I've been doing lately with the Kindle books is copying and pasting the parts I want to refer to when traveling into a Google doc. I also copy and paste some of Rick's little city maps and add them in there, too. When it's finished, I print out everything then physically cut out the sections and put them all into a blank journal, along with my own notes.

It's a fun way to make my own pseudo-guidebook. ๐Ÿ˜Š
