Rick Steves Guide Books

When you buy a RS guidebook, does it include discounts and or coupons.

If so have you used any and are they valuable? Are they easy to use?

Sometimes he negotiates a small discount with hotels and B&B’s. Is that what you mean? Just mention it when booking. In Bath, it will save us £10 a night. The proprietor of our next B&B stay in Bath urged us to always mention RS when booking at any restaurant as well. He says sometimes it will get you a table when none are available, at least in Bath. RS kudos equate into a tremendous revenue source for them, so maybe they’re looking at it as paying it forward.

As someone else said, sometimes if you mention RS, the hotel or restaurant will give you a small discount.

When we went to Chartres, we went to a restaurant recommended by Rick. We didn't even have a book but just because we mentioned Rick Steves the guy gave us a discount. Though we did have to listen to his stories about Rick and see his prized photo of Rick and him-apparently some in the French tourism sector love him. It was kind of cute and you saw how Rick's attitude wins him friends.

So I don't know if I'd buy the book, but definitely mention you came to the place because of Rick Steves.

No coupons. Not many discounts and they are just nominal. Its not that kind of business.

There are no coupons in the books but as others have mention if you ask for a Rick Steves discount at a hotel that is suggested in his book often you will get one. Also, sometimes we've noticed that many European hotels will offer "Senior" discounts so we always ask.

The hotel, Aberdeen Hotel, we stayed at in Rome had a price listing on their website for RS. I just had to show my RS Guidebook at check in.

Thanks for all your replies.

It never hurts to ask about discounts.

I am a senior so that is a possible discount at some places as well as maybe some RS discounts here and there.

I'm also a senior and use RS guide books extensively when planning trips. I'm not too concerned about discounts at hotels and restaurants because....

  • The discounts probably won't be much and not all staff at each establishment may know about them.
  • In order to claim a discount, I may have to show the guidebook. On a multi-country trip, I may only have one of the guidebooks with me (or perhaps none).
  • I'd prefer not to limit my choices to places that offer discounts.

Using the RickSteves discount has paid for most of the books for us.

Francis,

I was hoping that someone would say that.

Someone said something about saving 10 pounds a night by mentioning Rick Steves. That sounds like a good savings to me.

I am going to buy Rick Steves London and perhaps Rick Steves Rome and Paris if and when I get to the two latter cities.
