Rick Steves Convertible Carry-on bag 9

Rick swears that this is the only bag you need. I looked at Ricks recommended packing list 2 pants, 5 underwear, etc. and something doesn't seem right. Has anyone actually stuck to the recommended packing list of Ricks and actually got it all to fit in his "only" bag???

Hi Ray!

I think I can help. If you follow the "Rick on TV" link on the home page, there are videos of outtakes and packing instruction. One video is of Rick himself showing what he has in his convertable backpack. And he has the 2 pants, 5 shirts, 5 underwear, day pack, etc, right there where you can see it all!

Here's the link to the video, just click on the one on packing tips:

It really can all fit!

I carry more than that, and it all fits. Not only that, I am below the 8kg carryon limit for Lufthansa.

Yes. I've even carried more and been under the wt. and size limits. I've gone for as long as 30 days and was able to manage very well with what the one bag can hold.

It may go without saying, but you do wear some of the clothes on the way there and don't pack them ALL in the bag! LOL

It's possible to do this. Aside from Rick's list, see also Travelite and OneBag

Thanks everyone for the help! I ordered the Rick Steves convertible carry-on and am going to try my 7th trip to Europe with only one bag. I hope it works out.

Rick's packing list isn't exactly the same as mine but it's similar.

I can get everything I need in a convertible carry on (including a daypack with snacks inside for the plane) and still have room left over.

I don't pack my bag to the gills because the load always expands while you are on the road.

It's completely possible and IMO preferable. At the end of every trip, I ask myself what wasn't worth bringing so I can reduce my list even more.

In shopping for travel items, I'm comparing the weight of the bag, weight of a pair of shoes, etc. to try to lighten my load as much as possible.
