Rick Steves announced that he’s Cancer-free!

I don’t see that this news has been posted yet on this Travel Forum, and at the risk of spreading private or personal information about Rick (although he publicly announced his cancer diagnosis back in August, and his surgery this past fall), I thought the recent good news about his being free of cancer was worth posting. As he approaches his 70th birthday in May, he’s good to continue his efforts to help make travel a meaningful pursuit for so many.

A post from last year talked about Rick and his situation (https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/general-europe/fb-post-from-rick-regarding-his-health-news-heart-emoji), but it’s been closed due to inactivity, so I couldn’t add to it. So here’s the good news, if anyone wasn’t already aware of it.

Steves was guest on KQED's Forum program/podcast on January 31, "Rick Steves Reflects on a Life of Travel"

Rick Steves is one of the most trusted sources for Americans traveling abroad. But he once dreamed of becoming a piano teacher. That was before he backpacked along the Hippie Trail from Istanbul to Kathmandu in 1978, a trip that made him want to help others experience life-altering travel. We talk to him about his new book called “On the Hippie Trail: Istanbul to Kathmandu and the Making of a Travel Writer” about a life spent away from home.

Really nice news. Salut!

I look forward to more reports, more reflections and more of the generosity of spirit that has led to Rick’s support for an eclectic group of causes, from Bread for the World to Seattle Hempfest and Washington State’s Faith Action Network.

Interview in Salon -
https://www.salon.com/2025/02/28/rick-steves-wants-to-radicalize-you/

When I meet Steves at Salon’s studio, he is every bit the elder statesman I recognize from PBS, soft spoken, gracious yet authoritative. But as soon as he starts talking about his time on the hippie trail, the t-shirt-clad kid who once wrote about discovering the pleasures of "Shiva's favorite weed" emerges. "When I left Istanbul with my buddy heading east, I remember thinking, ‘I don't know a single soul between here and Seattle,” he recalls with a smile. “We were heading off into the unknown. We never knew we were going to lay our heads the next night. We never knew how sick we'd get.”

For those who can't get too much Rick, there was an excellent interview of Rick by the great Walter Isaacson last night on PBS, the Amanpour & Co. segment. It turns out Isaacson had a similar trip at about the same time.

Great news! Wish him the best going forward!

I’ve benefited so much from the RS tours we did, his guidebooks and this forum! I doubt I would be traveling independently so much to Europe now without that excellent start of learning how from his tours. Thank you SO much, Rick, if you happen to be browsing your forum sometime & see this!

Unusually I can actually see that PBS programme from the UK- most of the time I get blocked.
