Rick on CBS "Sunday Morning" today

Passing along in case anyone is interested. :O)

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/this-week-on-sunday-morning-april-18-2021/

"For four decades Rick Steves has introduced many to the pleasures of international travel, through his popular PBS series, specials and guidebooks. During the pandemic, correspondent Conor Knighton learns, the man who has canvassed Europe's best- and least-known tourist sites has learned the simple pleasures gained in an unfamiliar destination: his own kitchen."

LOL, exploring the mysteries of my own kitchen might be a good idea. It's foreign territory.

OK, Kathy, We’ll be sure to see that when it airs in a bit. I wonder whether Rick applies sone of his travel philosophy wherever he goes? Travel light, and don’t carry too many things from the fridge to the counter at once. Use an open jaw plan, start at the table and end at the dishwasher, for efficiency. See some places in-depth, not just superficially ... look for treasures at the back of that second shelf, not just the easy-to-reach items at the front of the cabinet.

He learned how to operate his stove. That is one new thing.

It was a lovely feature. He came across as genuine and heart-felt, but the most impressive statement was that he is STILL keeping his staff intact.....that is impressive and generous!!

On the humorous side......what? He had never cut an onion before???

Then the next--up story (airing right now) is about Easter Island, which is oh-so-much on our to-do list.

I see a "Cooking Like a European" book in the future.

Great interview Rick. Happy to see you and your tremendous team have the opportunity to receive broader National publicity beyond your already large fan base. It is time to get ready for an avalanche of worldwide travel as the pandemic comes under control. My wife and I are looking forward to signing up for Rick Steve’s great tours just as soon as they are available again.

Thanks for sharing Kathy! Very nice interview. I recall his local interview last year when he mentioned his unfamiliar destination- his kitchen! Living close to his beloved Edmonds, WA. we walk the waterfront and streets. We used to frequent the Travel Center & attend the yearly reunions. We miss it. Hopeful for the future!

I would also like to “brag” that Rick donated funding for the newly opened waterfront Edmonds Senior Center. It’s gorgeous!! We are looking forward to touring when open. In the meantime their Bistro “The Potlatch” is open as well as a coffee bar & Gelato that is accessed outside for takeaway. There are park benches to take in the stunning Edmonds waterfront...

The whole Sunday Morning show seems to have been really Travel-oriented, starting with stories about “Desperate Americans that are going to be going somewhere, anywhere, and in the immediate future!” and “C’mon to Vegas right now. What happens here, stays here!”

Rick’s interview was a refreshing change, less intimidating, no mention of “revenge travel,” and clearly confirming that he and his staff are ready to resume tours, although it’s going to happen when the doors are opened, and he’s not going to ramrod them. He says that his tours will be among the first visitors returning to Europe.

Edit: see below - Rick didn’t say that, upon review, but the reporter said Rick doubts his groups will be the first ones back.

After re-watching the program, not distracted by trying to get a quick breakfast fixed before going on a long hike, I see that I misheard, and misreported, what the segment said. The reporter said that Rick doubts his tours would be the first ones back. But “doubts” isn’t “refuses.” And he said “whether it’s next year or the year after that, we’re going to come out of this.” Not sure when this was filmed, so maybe he’s not talking about returning until 2023. Sounds like he’ll be slicing onions in the meantime.
