Rhodes and Malta

I love Rick's latest book on cruising the Mediterranean! Unfortunately several of the ports that we are going to on a 24 day Back2Back cruise are not covered. Does anyone have any advice about visiting (remember that this is only day's cruise stop) either Rhodes or Malta. Is public transportation a possibility? I am looking at other guidebooks though none are as interesting or useful as Rick's, but information and opinions of folks who have actually been to these places would be greatly appreciated.

There is lots to see in Malta. First, the towns are all picturesque. There's a walled city (Mdina), a cathedral with 2 Caravaggios (he lived in Malta for quite some time), ancient archeological sites and good museums, beautiful churches. Fascinating history. I was there for 5 days on an intensive group tour in June and as much as we saw, there was as much that we missed. I don't know where the cruise ships dock. Overall the public bus service is good and easy to use. Taxis are available everywhere. On the other hand, Malta is small and packed with cars, so it can sometimes take a long time to go a short distance. If you want to make the most of your day, I recommend you get a guide. The rates in Malta are generally lower than Europe, you could put together a great day that would take you to the things you are most interested in. Our local guide was Miriam Mercieca. She was excellent: charming, knowledgeable, very flexible, fluent English. Her email is [email protected]

Thank you so much for your prompt reply, Chana. I envy your 5 day stay. We definitely want to go to the Hyperblion (I know that I am misspelling this and must make our reservations as they only allow 10 people in at a time. Are there other spots that you would say are "do not miss"?

Rhodes, Greece was a VERY (maybe 5-10 minute) easy walk into the historic town from the cruise port. We were on a Silversea cruise, but a few other ships (both small and large) were at the same port. If you are interested in seeing just Rhodes, it's very easy to do on your own, although a guide always adds so much. Grand Master's Palace and Knights Row (or street) are the key highlights. We took a Rhodes/Lindos all-day shore excursion, which was fabulous (especially the acropolis in Lindos, which offered incredible views). But, one has to be in extremely good physical condition to make the climb in Lindos. Rhodes is especially lovely when arriving by water, as it is very magical looking. Haven't been to Malta, so can't advise. Have a wonderful journey.

Thank you, Margaret! That is excellent news about Rhodes.
as we have booked private tours with other fellow passengers met through Cruise Critic, happy that we can explore Rhodes on our own!

There were so many places that were wonderful - I think you will enjoy whatever you choose.

Hello Marianne. If you will be at the Island Rhodes for a total of 4 hours (typical of cruise ships), I recommend : choose either A) walk to the archaeological museum located in Rhodes Old town. Be certain that you know the time that museum closes, and be there at a much earlier time than that.
or B) Ride in a bus from Rhodes town to Lindos, and return to Rhodes town.

Thanks for the excellent suggestions. We will actually be on Rhodes for 9 hours. Still too short a time, I agree. Especially someone such as we who were accustomed to living in European countries from two to four years at a time.
