resupply of medicine while traveling internationally

When traveling in Italy, Croatia and/or Turkey, we will need to have a package of medicine delivered to us. The medicine comes in a needle, individually packaged. I am starting to look into how we can have this done and thought I'd seek the advice of the seasoned travelers on this site! Delivered to an embassy? Hotel? Any suggestions?! Thank you so much!

Have you checked with your pharmacy? They can override a 30 day or 90 day prescription for people who are traveling. You might be able to take the whole dose with you.

You won't be able to have it delivered to an embassy. An embassy is not your personal concierge service. You might be able to have it delivered to a hotel, but there can be strict laws about shipping medicines, so you'd need to make sure that there's a company that could ship the medicine to you in whichever country you want. You might be able to get enough to take with you if you explain the circumstances. You might be able to get a U.S. prescription filled in those countries. You might be able to see a local doctor in those countries who could write you a new prescription to fill locally.

Check to see if Fed Ex International has a center of operations in the city you're going to. Maybe you can have meds delivered to yourself at "will call." Medicine is a serious problem for U.S. citizens traveling over 30 days when medicines are for pain, or "controlled substances." U.S. doctors have to sign a new written prescription monthly, and they're not allowed to postdate prescriptions. My wife has to stage her doctors' visits to the last day before we leave on vacation, and obtain refills with her insurance company picking up the tab for her med's.

My wife has a couple of health issues that require a boat load of prescription meds--syringes, the whole nine yards. We take it all with us for 6 to 8 weeks at a time. That's my suggestion for you. Let me know if you'd like the details.

My wife left some meds at home some years ago. The US value of the med was about $200. First we had a friend get them out of the house and send them Fedex second day air ($100+) They didn't show In three days so we went to a private clinic (about $75) and explained the situation. After a brief exam we had a prescription for a 90 day supply that cost about $20 at a nearby pharmacy. Same name brand drugs in the same packaging as the US and they worked fine. I wouldn't plan it that way but you could always call a clinic well in advance of you trip and have the discussion.

Thank you for your information. I knew RS travelers would be helpful. I now have more avenues to explore. I like the fedex idea the most, and its helpful to know we shouldn't bother with the embassies.

The laws regarding shipping medication are very strict as well as the laws for taking them into another country. I know the Post Office will not ship medication unless it is shipped by a DEA licensed facility - you can NOT have a relative or friend pick it up at the pharmacy and mail them to you - unless you do not declare the package contents - but you the run the risk of being caught and facing stiff penalties. Contact the pharmacy that will fill the prescription and see if they can/will ship them to you. Or see if you can get a vacation override and fill what you will need for your entire trip before you leave.

Barbara, Explain to your pharmacy about your trip and your need for extra meds. They can possibly extend your prescriptions. My wife is a pharmacist. They do this for people all the time. She said to talk to the pharmacist directly rather than a clerk. You will have a difficult time with mailing. Also, some medications that are prescriptions here can be purchased over the counter in some places.

I've gotten 3-month vacation overrides. Don't wait until the last days before you leave to start setting this up, insurance companies can be a little stubborn sometimes.
