Restored Faith in Humanity - We Got Our Backpack Back After 6 Weeks

I originally posted about our lost backpack on May 25, 2014. Many readers responded with empathy and sympathy along with many helpful suggestions. We did managed to get our backpack with all our belongings back 6 weeks after we lost it (4 weeks after we arrived home). Some honest person turned it into the Berlin train station's Lost and Found. While there have been many posts about kindness from strangers, there have also been many on scammers and pickpockets, too. If you have a similar story that restored your faith in humanity while traveling, please share it!

Follow Up Post on June 19, I posted:
"Backpack finally arrived from Berlin with everything including our iPad in it after nearly 5 weeks and paying US$65 for shipping. On another note, we had purchased travel insurance through Travel Guard and we have to give their customer service credit for helping us in the process of getting our bag back. Also need to give big thanks to our Airbnb hosts in assisting us as well. A happy ending!"

Original Post on May 25:
"We are usually very careful people, but in a moment of inattentiveness, we left our backpack with our iPad and GPS in it at the Berlin train station. The train from Berlin to Prague was late. Instead of having 10 minutes time to board the train and get settled in, as soon as the train arrived, everyone was rushing to get on the train. As soon as we got on, the train started to pull out. It was only then we realized we didn't have our backpack. Without our iPad, we did not have access to a phone, email, or internet for the rest of our trip to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. We had downloaded all our travel information on it - maps, schedules, etc. For the next 12 days, we managed to do everything we had planned to do. It was perhaps not as efficient, but we managed. Berlin Train station claims that they did find our backpack, so we will wait and see if we will get everything back."

Great to hear, Dee. I think that it's too often in this world that the default position is one of suspicion and mistrust, thanks for the follow up.

Dee,

That's great to hear! Unfortunately, most cases of that type don't have such a favourable outcome.

I too have had good experience with lost articles in Switzerland. I left my coat on a Swiss train and had written it off as a loss, but my wife reminded me that it was a Christmas present from her and I'd better make an effort. The clerk at a ski shop with a thick Scottish accent virtually guaranteed I'd get it back if I filed a lost article claim. "The system works! Try it." So I got on SBB.ch, found the lost articles section, wrote out the description in English, hit send, and immediately got back a list or articles left on Swiss trains in that time frame and the computer's estimate of the likelihood it was mine. One came up 90%, and although their description was in German, it looked to be it. I called to confirm and they had it to the station by our hotel the next day for a 10 chf service charge. I shocked, to say the least, and had to listen to "I told you so." for the rest of the holiday.

Hi,

Good to hear...a credit to DB and to Berlin Hbf. As they say, "Alles gut, Ende gut."

I remember your post, and I felt so badly for you. Glad there was a happy ending, and that there was an honest soul who turned it in.

You were very fortunate. Right person at the right time.

I lost an expensive cardigan on my recent trip to Europe (at airport here). It doesn't feel good to lose your stuff, especially while travelling. I always try my best to turn in items to lost and found, hoping the person eventually gets their things.

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging words.
@Sam: Glad to hear you got your coat back from the Swiss train. It never hurts to ask.
@Ginger: Sorry to hear about your sweater. I am sure you really miss it. But I believe in Karma. Since you are always doing the right thing - more good things will come your way than bad. You will get probably get a new sweater that will be better than the one you lost (maybe as special present from a special someone in your life).

Hi Dee-thanks for sharing & glad you were able to salvage your trip even without your iPad!

Unfortunately, it seems anymore there are 6 stories of "bad" for every "good," but those good stories keep things going.

Dee,

I was told at the airport that no one turned in my sweater. Then I returned and checked with lost and found and they said no.

For some reason this morning I decided to call L&F at the airport and decribe in details the sweater in question...

They asked what date it was lost, and to hold on. To my shock, they have the sweater!!! Maybe someone found it, didn't have time to return because boarding for flight, took it and brought it back??? I'll never know, but I thought of you.

It wasn't about the monetary value as my fave sweater to fly in. Didn't keep me hot but took the chill off, and neutral color that goes with all my travel pieces.

Dealing with flu now, but I'm getting someone to pick it up Wednesday. Happy dance!!!

Thanks for sharing the good news! Although there are some very professional thieves who know how to work the crowds, I'm convinced that most people are honest and trying to help.

I always imagine myself in the situation of losing something, so I make it a point to turn stuff in. Even my children were taught to do the same.

One time I found a wallet with $1,000 cash in it!! Quickly looked for driver's licence and address or phone number. Found it was an elderly guy, and checked the phone book when I got home...probably 15 years ago. The relief on his face when he came to my house to pick it up will remain with me forever. He insisted on hugging me, grabbed my hand, shoved $50 in it (even though I protested) and thanked me until he got to his car. He had taken the money out to pay for prescriptions for his wife. I have found that it's better to track the person yourself because had I turned in the wallet to the youngsters working at the pharmacy, there is no telling whether he would get it back.

Dee,
I am happy to hear you got your belongings back safely. I would be sad if it happened to me as well. I could live without all the electronics, but it would be hard to lose my clothing luggage for a whole trip. I am sure this will never happen to you again.

It taught me a lesson! When going through security, everything is going in my hand luggage. Having to taking cardigans, scarves, watches etc. off causes such confusion. Plus I was with other people and concerned that one of them had dropped his sweater!

So easy to be distracted while travelling.

I am more thrilled that Dee got so much back. That would have caused me a lot of anguish.
