Reservations needed for camping in Germany / Austria?

Greetings My family will be spending 2 weeks in Bavaria / Austria this July. We are one somewhat of a budget and plan to camp for the most part. Any recommendations on whether we need to reserve camping spots in advance? Or will we usually be able to find a spot to pitch our tent if we just show up? Thanks Philip

It really depends on where you are. There aren't as many campgrounds in Germany as you'll find in the Western U.S. Also please be aware that campfires aren't allowed in Germany. For some people (i.e. me) that was a deal breaker, so I camp in France instead.
