Gab,

In Munich you might try Hotel Uhland. It's not too far from the train station, and located in a quiet area.

Happy travels!

I also have used www.berlin-beds.com to find an apt. This turned out to be perfect for me and my daughter. We enjoyed having a kitchen and all the amenities and it was very reasonable, 48 € per night.

When are you looking for reasonably priced accommodations in Munich? If you're looking for anytime during Octoberfest (which, I was surprised to discover, is not confined to October...it spills over into September and November), you might not find any since most places raise their prices tremendously during that period of tremendous demand. If you'll looking for a different part of the year, then it's just a big city like any other.

uh, Dave, the Oktoberfest is from 19 Sept. to 4 Oct. This is about when it is every year. It never is in Nov. and always starts in Sept. Not quite sure where you got your information, but someone is pulling your leg.

I stand corrected about Novemberfest. I was surprised when I looked for hotel rooms in September and found all the rates seemed to be double or triple what I was expecting. Just trying to warn the OP that looking for "resonable priced" rooms in Munich might be nearly impossible at some times. At those times, I think it makes sense to look elsewhere.

Actually, sometimes the hotel rates go up in the larger cities because of the trade fairs. Frankfurt is notorious for this, but also Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Köln, etc. can be affected. This is why I recommend that people check the online tourist board sites for any kind of event that will raise the hotel rates. Any number of things will change the rates and availability of rooms. It might be soccer, trade fairs, school vacations (they have fall vacation in Germany) or other large festivals. Tourist boards will have those listed on their websites.

We stayed at the hotel Royal in Munich. It was during Oktoberfest and we paid about 100USD including breakfast. It is just across from the main train station and walking distance to a lot of the sites. There are a few strip clubs on the same block but I did not feel unsafe at all when I would venture out alone.

Hotel Blauer Bock and Hotel am Viktualienmarkt are both located near the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz. Both of these hotels are clean and very affordable and in a much better location than the main train station.

Since the Underground Metro links directly to the main train station you will still have the convenience of easy and fast transportation.

In Berlin, Hotel Kastanienhof is nice - www.hotel-kastanienhof-berlin.de. It's in the old eastern sector, which I found far more interesting than the old western sector. Hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the nearest subway station and in a neighborhood with lots of restaurant choices. Good beer hall within walking distance, too.
