Request for Advice for EU travel in last week of June/first week of July 2026

I am looking for any recommendations about a travel itinerary for roughly 22 June-02 July 2026 to europe. Loosely expecting to fly into Amsterdam or maybe Munich. I'm looking for recommendations with the following considerations:

Not too much city time (but maybe a little for the 2 "first time to the EU" couple that will travel with my wife and I.
Prefer nature walks/gardens to museums
Prefer smaller cafes and shops then crowded places (somewhat like Versaille can be)
There is an interest in visiting a beer garden (thus the Munich option) and maybe a castle
not more than 2 (ish) hotel changes or long travel time. We may rent a car or take trains to move around (if we do at all)
Was considering an Amsterdam to Cologne to Antwerp to Amsterdam loop but that may feel like too many moves and travel time.
We are very open to any ideas/recommendations anyone has.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

You dont want cities but you are considering Amsterdam, Cologne and Antwerp and you are looking for museums, cafes, beer gardens and shops. And you have 7.5 days on the ground in Europe.

Okay, I suggest at least an open jaw ticket if you want 3 stops. Amsterdam will be very crowded. The other two as well most likely. A little late to get any bargains on rooms or flights plus these are not among the cheapest to begin with. If that becomes a problem look to secondary cities or eastern Europre.

And I would limit it to Antwerp and Amsterdam.

Are you interested in visiting the Bavarian Mountains and Salzburg? Would you be willing to rent a car?

I was only looking at Amsterdam because the flights were reasonable and originally I had to go there for work. I am willing to rent a car. Amsterdam and/or Munich were just thoughts but we probably would just be there for 2-3 days then somewhere else.

You could be reproducing the first half of my first Europe trip from 17 years ago.
Amsterdam 3 or 4 nights
Cologne 2 nights
Mosel Valley 3 nights.
Munich 2 or 3 nights.
All by train.
Fly back from Munich.

backtoidaho,
If what you have on the ground is 7.5-8 days (and 8 nights), I would fly into Munich. It is a large city but with some small town vibes. The Bavarian Alps are close by (1-2 hours drive), with the Zugspitz, Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen; many beer gardens and beer halls (not just the large and somewhat touristy Hofbrauhaus) with good food and music to go with the beer; Nymphenberg Palace; the Residenz museum complex (don't miss the treasury with jewels galore); a fantastic science museum that has to be visited to appreciate; lots of small cafes; beautiful churches (e.g. St. Michael's and St. Peter's) and the amazing glockenspiel in the rathaus at Marienplatz. There are puppet shows, terrific shops (esp. for Christmas ornaments), brewery tours, good public transportation in the city. With a car you could take two days driving on the Romantic Road through small charming towns like Dinkelsbuhl on the way to Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber. For a thoughtful and sobefing interlude, Dachau is less than 20 miles from Munich.

So, with a full day trip to the Alps, and another 2 day Romantic Road trip (overnight in Rothenberg), you will have 4.5-5 days left for Munich proper. This kind of covers all the things you mentioned above. You will have so much to do I wouldn't consider wasting most of a day moving to another city. If you don't want to spend this much time in the city, spend another one in the mountains.

We loved our time in Munich and Bavaria in general. I really recommend it!
Have a great trip, wherever you decide to go.

With such a short time frame I would stay in the North, e. g. Hamburg, to avoid wasting time in trains or buses.

Bavarian beer garden you can also find here, e. g. Klempau's Paulaner Biergarten an der Milchhalle in Hamburg. Of course other beer gardens are available too. Day trip Schwerin offers one of the nicest castles (World Heritage) and worth-visiting old town elements. Lübeck, Wismar and other places around in Hamburg are worth-Visiting.

Not to forget the world's unique Miniatur Wunderland and of course a tour through Hamburg's port.

Often people check flight cost thinking the nonstop is the cheapest, that's not always true and sometimes its only marginally true. I remember discovering on one ocassion many years ago that flights to Frankfurt cost more than the flight to Budapest on the same flight to Frankfurt, then changing to Budapest.

So hunt around and dont be sold on Amsterdam.

Your description of what you are looking for describes Tuscany, Bordeaux, Salzburg and western Austria, Brasov and Transylvania, the coast of Montenegro, Egar and the Hungarian wine country; just to name a few.
