Hi, I have an IPhone 4 under Verizon ( will get new release iPhone this year). I was planning to get the international text plan on my coming trip but heard how T mobile phone can be used internationally.
I don't plan to switch carrier but wonder if I can just rent a T mobile phone for just 2 weeks and be able to use it in Europe. Thanks.
Sally,
I havent looked into renting a phone for my travels, but i would assume that it wouldnt be a good deal on your end, again, assuming.
I dont know where you first stop is, but i for me, i just bought an inexpensive Quad Band phone when i was overthere. Its was in the UK and i paid about 80 USD (United States Dollars) for it including 10? BPS (Pounds) of time. I still have/use it on my travels and have bought a USA T SIM for it too.
If youre not picky about what you want to use overthere, they have some inexpensive phones you can get and KEEP and use back home if you choose. When i bought mine a couple years ago, if i remember correctly the least expensive phone that was available was in the 9 ish USD range including time. Again, this was in the UK and a couple years ago.
happy trails.
Thanks Ray. Our first stop is London. Our itinerary is London-Venice and Prague ( yes, crazy itinerary). I have an old phone ( not smartphone ) with a SIM card which I have used in Europe 3 years ago. I was thinking of the convenience of a smartphone and just thought of T mobile .But you are right , the cost of renting one for 2 weeks might not be worth the cost.
sally,
Renting a phone is often a costly and awkward solution. Since you already have an unlocked GSM phone (I'm assuming quad-band?), I'd suggest just using that with a SIM card from one of the travel phone firms such as Roam Simple, Cellular Abroad, Telestial, Mobal, EuroBuzz or others. Many of them use U.K.-based numbers with fairly consistent rates in various countries and post-paid billing (calls charged to a credit card), so no issues with topping-up. Some have SIM cards at about $5, so not a huge expense.
You could also take your Verizon iPhone 4 and just use it for web surfing in Wi-Fi areas, although if you'll also be travelling with an iPad or Laptop, the phone wouldn't be required.
