Renting GSM or Satellite phones

The traveler has Verizon and I have, in the past, switched their BB Tours to a Global Plan and had poor results. Really, in France we can never get it to work - I am looking for some company I can count on who will be some what reliable and can troubleshoot if needed. Would like to offer option of renting a glabal phone (GSM / satellite / dual mode). Looking at Global Phoneworks LLC and Cellomobile.com. Really want some feedback and guidance. They will be in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and France. All look to be on GSM (I THINK). Anyone? Anyone?

bronwen, I wouldn't recommend a Satellite Phone unless "money is no object". They're not only really expensive, but coverage will be limited inside buildings or wherever no "line of sight" is available. The first option you could consider is the Verizon Global phone program, which will provide a GSM phone for a period of up to month. Contact Verizon for the details. You could also look at phones from the "travel phone" firms such as Roam Simple, Call in Europe, Cellular Abroad, Telestial or Mobal. Check their respective websites for details on their plans and pricing. Given the low cost, I'd probably buy an inexpensive GSM phone rather than renting one, as it would likely be more cost effective. I have no information on the network coverage in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, however "the traveller" should have no difficulty with access in France. Good luck!

My good old Mobal works in all four countries just fine. Syria was iffy a couple of times, but only because the far beyond just doesn't have towers - - normal tourist places/population centers are okay.
