Renting Apartments in Europe

Has anyone ever rented an apartment in Europe? It seems to me like its a lot better deal then getting a hotel especially if you have more people. There are a lot of websites that have vacation rentals in Europe but I'm not sure if they're completely legit. Any ideas? I'm looking for a place in Paris and Rome. Thanks

Start with Vacation Rentals By Owner:
www.vrbo.com
There you will find rentals for all of Europe...in all sizes and price ranges. They have a good history with most of their clients.

I've rented chalets in Austria, France and a beach house in Spain via www.interchalet.de (website is in English, too) and never had a problem.

When I got a Rome apartment I went with Romeby.com LOVED them and the apartment. They have properties in many of the larger cities. Renting an apartment is a great option. Be sure to look at the Graffiti Wall under Alternative Accommodations as well.

Just returned from Paris and rented from Isabelle.

Isabelle has many apartments in Paris. We stayed in the Beauborg apt in the Marias and loved it. She is easy to deal with and her apts are beautiful! Here is the website: www.IsabellesApartments.com

Used VRBO.com for an apt in Bruges, Belgium; used vacationsinparis.com and iloveparisapartments.com last year & this year in Paris. Each was easy to use, and the apts were accurately portrayed. We did not encounter any problems other than trying to remember how to operate the dishwasher and the washer/dryer.

Hello Peter!

I'd check out the Tripadvisor forums for both Paris and Rome - do a search on "apartment rentals" and you should get lots of information to get you started. We are renting an apartment in paris through vacationsinparis.com - a U.S. company based in New Jersey that comes highly recommended by people on the TA site. So far, I am very pleased with the company. They have been very prompt with their replies and answers to my questions. One thing that is interesting with them is that they mail you your keys before you leave along with directions to the apartment and basic information about it. I'll post a review when we get back and let you know how it worked out!

We rented a one bedroom apartment in Paris for one week. It was perfect. We went through Paris Attitude, but then worked directly with the owner and he was great. We were about 3 blocks east of Champ de Mars (Eiffel Tower area). Near the metro and all sorts of shopping. We didn't have AC, but luckily didn't need it.

For me, anything more than 3 or 4 days in a city is worth an apartment....so much more flexibility, and a lot cheaper! We've had success in Rome and Paris at homelidays.com , where you deal directly with the owner, and you'll see reactions of others who have staid there.

We used a website called: www.berlin-beds.com and were really pleased. My daughter and I had a small studio apt. all to ourselves with our own front door key, twin beds, fully equipped kitchen, perfect cleanliness and a super price. 48 euros per night. We couldn't have stayed in a hostel for that. We were only 2 stops from the train staition and close to the Zoo too, which is where all the walking tours seem to start. The website is not only easy to use, including little calendars by each apt. to check for availability, photos and contact info for the landlords, but they also check back with you after the trip to see how you liked it.

The location is most important. Be sure to look at the unit before your agree to rent. Some owners will negotiate on price; so try that. If you want to you can walk away and come back later and rent it. Or you can continue looking for one you like.

Do a google search for "Paris apartments" by the area you want to be in. Spend as much time as you have researching on the net. But I would not rent on the net. I always go to look at the unit. That is the only way you can judge the neighborhood and the size of the rooms.

Hi Peter,
We've noticed many who log on here have had flawless experiences with VacationInParis. It is a US company with their HQ in New Jersey. You may contact them toll-free if you have questions about the listings in the Web site [link above]. You could have the key to your way cool Paris apartment [maybe Rome, too, for all we know] before you leave Austin.
Happy Travels ! ... P

Vrbo.com is good but I love www.vacationinparis.com. I have rented a great Paris apartment at a reasonable price. I am not sure if they have places in Rome but you can give them a call, as they are US based and have both US and international numbers.

Definately rent an apartment! They can be as cheap as hostels and you get your own kitchen, bathroom and space. It was so nice to be able to leave our stuff out and lock the door behind us knowing nobody else would be coming in and out at night or early in the morning.

Hi Peter,
We rented a house in Aillac, France (Dordogne region)from www.gites.com and a 2 bedroom flat in La Serra ,Italy (Liguria) from www.homelidays.com.
We would rate the accomodations as a 8 out of 10 (just quirky issues, nothing major) The cost worked out to about $110 euros a night, but for a family of 4, with full use of a kitchen and laundry it was a Big Moneysaver.

I would highly reccomend looking into it.

I was in Paris in June and rented from rentalo.com. The person I rented from didn't charge me any hidden fees, and the apartment looked exactly like the pictures. I did have to bring $500 cash for the secuirty deposit, which I got back immediately on my last day (after a quick inspection). The apartment I had was 1/2 block from Notre Dame and for my 9 day rental it came to 111 euros a night.

If you rent from someone, ask what fees you'll need, such as security deposit, if they take credit/paypal, how to get the key, and when you'll get your deposit back.

remember to ask about how long a minimum stay is. most places say 4 nights MINIMUM.

Also - make sure you have a way to reach the owner/manager while you're actually in the house in case you can't figure out how to work something.
