Renting a car in Munich

My aunt and I are spending a week in Munich. She is has slight trouble walking and uses a cane, sometimes a wheelchair. We were going to rent a car for a day trip to Bavaria, and an overnighter in Salzburg. Should I rent the car for the rest of our trip in Munich to get around? Are there places to park, drive, etc. Is public transit easily accesible?
Thanks for your help!

Hmm, that's a tough variation on a theme, given your aunt's limited mobility. Public parking is scarce to non-existent in the center of the city. Most of the sites of interest to tourists sit within a relatively compact area. And because of the many pedestrian-only streets, sometimes it takes less time to walk somewhere than to drive. I don't remember how extensive the bus system is, but the metro is more useful for bringing commuters from outlying areas into the city center than for tourists. On the other hand, because the city is so bicycle friendly, it shouldn't be too hard to push a wheelchair around, if that is an option.

The biggest drawback to a rental car, as I see it, is that because of the dearth of parking, you would probably often need to drop your aunt off, then double back to your parking spot at your hotel (you would need to get a hotel that offers parking!) and then walk on your own.

didnt have the limited mobility issue like your aunt but we ended up parking our car for our stay in munich. except for a trip to dachau which you can do by tour or public transit. used the metro and walked. the parking really is limited.
