Renting a car in Italy and dropping of in Italy?

Can you rent a car in Italy and drop off in Germany? I can't find any car rental sites that have an option.

My wife and I will be getting to Rome on 9-17-14, Then Rome to Florence on 9-20-14, then Florence to Lake Como on 9-22-14. We will be doing all of that travel via Train. From Lake Como we need to somehow get to Munich, mainly looking at Train(roughly 8 hours), or Plane (roughly 4-5 Hours with train to airport, baggage claim and safe pre flight time cushion). While in Germany my wife wanted to see Castle Neuschwanstein which i notice was about 2 hours way back towards italy. So instead of taking a train or flight from Milan to Munich I was going to see if driving to Munich from Lake Como was possible, i figure we can stop off at the castle and then continue into munich....plus have the freedom of driving!

Any help is much appreciated. Car rentals? Prices? Route recommendations?

Thanks!

Try AutoEurope for options. I just did a search and came back with Eurocar options renting in Milan, Italy and dropping in Munich. Not sure where you are staying around Lake Como, but you may need to rent a car before you get to Lake Como.

We rented through Eurocar in Frankfurt, then drove from Neuschwanstein to Lake Como (Veranna), for the same reasons you mention. The one way rental charge going that direction was hefty ($500), but for us the time saved traveling on a train was well worth it. Our road trip through Switzerland was beautiful. We stopped for a wonderful lunch in St. Moritz, took the tram up the mountain and walked down, then ended our road trip in Veranna with a gorgeous sunset over the lake. Also, you will have to buy CDW through the rental company going that direction as most credit cards don't cover rentals IN Italy.

You could but the drop fee in another county would be huge.

Hi,

Probably the cheapest and most logical would be to train from Lake Como to Milan and then to Garmisch, Germany via Innsbruck. Pick up a car in Garmisch and you're an hour or so from Fuessen (Neuschwanstein) and less than 2 hours from Munich. You could also stop at Ludwig's Linderhof Palace and maybe do the Zugspitze trip.

Yes, you can rent a car in Italy and drop in Germany. It's an option that comes with an expensive drop charge. Most of us will try to avoid the cost of dropping the car in a different country than where it was rented. There are lots of different ways to plan it, you could plan a circular route that brings you back into the first country at the end of your trip. Another option might be to drop the car in the country you rented, train (or walk) across the border and pick up another car to continue on your route. Sometimes picking up in one country and dropping in another is your best option - but be sure to consider alternatives before deciding on that.

I suspect Karen is referring to the Europcar company in her message above - a good option, and we've rented from Europcar several times with good results. Years ago, we rented from Hertz and picked up the car in Portugal and dropped it off in Spain. We paid a hefty 2-country charge, but it was our best option considering our schedule and where we were driving. Also, some rental companies specifically prohibit taking their cars into certain countries, but might allow driving into others.

Some rental companies even charge a fee if you pick up in one city and drop off in another, even within the same country . . . they have to recover the cost of shuttling their cars back where they need them. So depending on the company, it may be possible, but you may pay extra for the convenience. Doing separate cars in separate countries might be with exploring, if you have a way of getting to the car pick-up location in that second country. Best of luck finding something that works for you!
