We’re renting a vehicle in London thru Avis, pick up & return @ Heathrow. During our stay, we’d like to travel to Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland. Are there any restrictions?
Have you checked with Avis? My rental with Enterprise prohibited taking car ferries.
Others will weigh in on the logistical difficulties of said ferries.
Thanks Katherine. We talked to Avis US and they didn’t see any issues. However, we were advised to call Avis UK on Monday to verify. Thought we’d ask the question here in the meantime.
Travel Into Other Countries
What countries am I allowed to take the vehicle to?
You are only allowed to use the vehicle in the following countries:
England
Scotland
Wales
Northern Ireland
If you wish to drive into Republic of Ireland your rental will be subject to a cross border fee of £23.00. This fee covers cross border vehicle retrieval in case of breakdown. Avis cars may not be taken outside Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.

It takes a lot of scrolling through the "Location Policies" link in the "Term and Conditions" you have to accept in order to finalize a rental.
That appears to rule out the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, as well as the Isles of Scilly and the Faroes. hmmm. Interesting.
Well there is no car ferry to the Isles of Scilly anyway. Residents can have cars, and they are craned/winched abroad at both ends. But no visitors cars.
And for the Faroes you would have to drive to the north of Denmark first to catch the car ferry.
