Rental Car Ins. question

Hi all,

We have always used the CDW that comes with our CC for car rentals in Germany. We are traveling later this year and were wondering if anyone has used www.travelguard.com for CDW coverage. Maybe I'm just worrying too much and should just get the CC CDW as usual.

Just be aware that even if you DO purchase the CDW there will be a rather large deductible. I know that my AMEX says it provide a CDW with zero deductible. However, it just seems like it would be a nightmare to actually have an accident in a different country - Germany - and then have to go to the rental car counter and explain that you have AMEX and that AMEX will take care of it. I don't think it would be NEAR that easy. Yes, AMEX may take care of it eventually, but the rental car company is not going to allow you to leave the counter or even the country without first charging 100% of the damage to your card. Then it's left up to you to try and reconcile with AMEX (or whomever).

It sounds like a really great idea, and it's definitely cheaper when you don't have to purchase CDW. But it scares the pants off me to think what "might" happen.

That's one reason why trains are so much easier and less hassle in my mind.

I suppose it is almost too obvious to even take the time to point out: that out of 10 people on this forum who used Travel Guard, if they didn't scrape the car, knock of the sideview mirror, or have any other unfortunate incident, then they don't know anything about the critical question: when the unexpected has happened to the car, did the insurance come through for them.
