Rental car age restrictions

My husband is soon to be 75 with a clean driving history. Anyone had a problem renting a car in Europe as a senior? I'd hate to be stuck doing all the driving:(

As I, age 77, understand it, the restrictions are imposed by the rental companies. We generally rent through AutoEurope or Kemwel. They ask your age when you are putting in the other necessary information. I assume that helps them offer only those companies that don't have age restrictions. We have had no problem with getting cars in Italy or France in the last two years.

I traveled with my uncle to Germany several years ago and he was the one renting the car. I don't remember all the details, but I know there was some issue about him being allowed to rent since he was over 70. He explained to them that he lived in Germany for many years, had a clean driving record both in the US and Gerrmany, could read the German road signs, etc. He was allowed to rent. this was through Auto Europe. I guess each rental agency has it's own age guidelines. Kind of puts pressure on those of us in our 60's to go to the places we want to drive through soon!

My father was renting cars well into his 80s with no trouble other than disclosing and shopping around, both in the UK and Italy.

Instead of being "stuck" doing the driving why don't you both take the easy way and relax on the train. A rental vehicle is a big responsibility with many potentials for unpleasant outcomes. Take the train and sit back and enjoy the comfort.
