According to the Big Apple Times, the State Department is expecting a lot of renewal applications this year as it is the ten year anniversary of the requirement for US citizens to hold passports returning from Canada/Mexico/Caribbean. So there should be a big influx this year with delays likely. So if your passport is close it's expiration it's something to consider:

Good information, Michael. And since is is SO easy to renew a passport by mail (assuming you have ample time) there's very little downside to an early renewal.

I had read the same thing, and my passport was due to expire within the next year. I mailed my old one off on January 8th, and the new one was delivered to me on the 25th. I did not pay for expedited service. Pretty quick turnaround, but of course, YMMV.

Mine expires 4/30 and I sent my renewal form in a few days ago. I'm not leaving until 5/1, so I will hope it arrives in time. :-)
