How can we help refugees as we travel throughout Europe?
Why not donate to the UNCHR? They are facing a huge funding gap, and they are better positioned/organized to help than individual tourists. There really is not much you can do while you're traveling - better to funnel help to organizations on the ground which are offering assistance.
Probably donations to UN organizations taking care of refugees maybe even Red Cross. If you go by car I would not recommend to give them lift especially across the borders, that could be considered human smuggling and there are harsh penalties for that.
I am torn between caring for people in need and doing anything that would encourage more to break the law and put their women and children at risk. I don't think i could support any group other than groups that help the refugees while they are still in the middle east. If someone could point me in that direction i would make a significant contribution.
James---the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is providing aid to refugees inside Syria and Afghanistan ( and nearby Lebanon and Jordan) as well as on the Greek shore landing spot. They also assist refugees who have been approved for re-settlement in the US ( and thus went through legal channels). They do not help the people who have entered the EU ( other than the shore at Greece) and thus do not encourage such travel. Is that what you are looking for?
Sasha, that was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
