in 2018 we are heading on a European river cruise ending in Hungary. From there we are going to visit relatives in Illmitz Austria for a few days. We'd like to extend our trip and trying to decide if we want to do Venice or Switzerland. Any thoughts?

What month are you doing this?
If mid-summer (July August) I would choose Switzerland. Venice is too hot and humid.

What about Austria once you are there? Will your family visit give you time to see some of Austria? If not, you might also consider that. In the Alps too, but less expensive than Switzerland. :-)

Our cruise ends June 24 so it would be about June28 or so into July

My vote is Venice
However, where I live I have mountains, so Switzerland has less appeal to me. Venice is unique.
If you are from a flatland place, you may appreciate Switzerland, more than I would.
That is my $0.02
