I am planning a 2-week independent trip that will include Rome, Florence, Venice and Paris. I thought that I would purchase the latest editions of RS' "Italy" book and his "Paris" book. But now the new pocket size guides have come out for Rome and Paris, and I am confused. I am especially interested in self-guided walking tours. I am thinking of buying the pocket guides for Rome and Paris, plus the older format books for Venice and Florence. Any opinions?
You should probably check the specific guides you're looking at, but when I checked one of the pocket guides against the country guide there was no new content. I'd buy the "big" Italy guide and cut it up, although if you won't go anywhere else in France the Paris guide might be worthwhile.
Does your 2-week trip include the travel to and from Europe? If it does you really only have 12 days for 4 cities. If your travel days are outside of the 2 weeks you have 14 days for 4 cities. Your will loose at least 1/2 day traveling between the Italian cities and most likely a whole day going to Paris. That will leave you about, at best, 12 days, at worst, 10 days to visit. That is not much time to see those wonderful cities. If you have been to them before, you probably will not be overwhelmed. If you have not been to them before, you could leave Paris for another trip and have more time in one country. Of course if you already have plane reservations into Italy and home from Paris, forget what I just said. I have been to all of them numerous times and could easily spend at least 5 days in Rome and a week in Paris. PM me if you want to discuss this. aloha charlie
