Recommendations for Reykjavic, Iceland lodging?

My family and I will be staying several days in Reykjavic this summer and am having trouble finding available rooms/apts. for four that aren't $500+ a night. Any recommendations? It seems I'm a bit late as many of the hotels are booked as well. Open to family rooms at hostels but the TripAdvisor reviews I've read for some aren't great. We won't have a car so prefer to stay in the central area vs. on the outskirts.

Thank you -- any suggestions are appreciated.

Try www.booking.com and filter the listings by number of people and by your budget. I looked at a quick sample of dates and managed to find some listings. I don't have experience going with three others, so I can't offer more specific advice, unfortunately. As a single person, I remember that lodging was not a good value so I settled...it was quite expensive even for a single person several years ago.

I wouldn't worry about staying a bit on the outskirts (meaning the inner suburbs) if you have to. They have a good bus system, and walking everywhere feels very safe. Good luck with your search.

Reykjavic, and Iceland for that matter, is an expensive place to visit. Hotels are expensive and so are restaurants. In October I spent about $350/night at the Canopy by Hilton. It's a new hotel with a great location. The room was too small for a family. Excellent staff, great included breakfast, nice rooms with the largest hotel tv's I've ever seen. Not sure if they have family rooms as the hotel brand is trying to be hip, modern.

Wendy: In August 2014, husband and I stayed in a budget studio with kitchenette at Room With A View in the heart of Reykjavik. The toilet room and separate bathroom were across the hall from our studio room. They do have larger apartments for families. The location is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, a grocery store and major sites. There was a small cafe on the ground floor which was convenient for breakfast or lunch.

I really enjoyed The Loft hostel in Reykjavik. Its on a main road near everything, it has a fun bar, outdoor patio overlooking the street and a full kitchen. Im not sure but i think they have private rooms also, you can also book all of your excursions through there!
