I've been on a few planes in the US this year, but I don't recall having the ability to recharge batteries on board. My need is for a small DVD player. I'll be leaving for a trip into Europe Friday on Delta, and British Airways. Any provision by them to recharge? I don't think I want to buy an extra battery.
On two trips, coach on BA had no provision for charging.
There might be provisions in first class, but not anywhere else that I have seen. There is plenty of entertainment onboard, though I usually spend the trip over getting as much sleep as possible.
Go to SeatGuru.com They list every plane flown by individual airline and give a map of each plane including any outlets available. If outlets are available on your plane, make sure you have the right kind of adaptor. A regular plug doesn't work on every plane. It's up to the airline to decide which type of plug to use. The seatguru website will also have this information.
Wayne, Given the fact that you're leaving on Friday, it's doubtful that you'll have time to find an alternate power source for the DVD player. The link provided by Frank II is excellent for describing the various power systems on aircraft. However, a number of different systems are used and the aircraft you'll be flying on may or may not have normal 115 VAC power (if any?). If it uses the Empower system, you may need an Adapter to operate your DVD player. What type of batteries are used in the DVD player? Buying an extra battery may be the easiest and simplest solution. Good luck!
I have a LX DP781 DVD player with a DPB28 battery pack. Although I'm leaving Friday, I have three day stop overs in Flint and Milwaukee. The longest duration of flying time is 7 hours. I don't see a expected power duration for the player. I see they have a support 800 number, so I will call them later in the morning. Well, it looks like I might need to add a few books to my pack.
Not sure where you make connection to British Airways, but there are some airports that have stations where you can recharge things. If you have time you could get your laptop fully charge before boarding your flight.
The only airline, I'm aware of, that provides outlets in economy class is Continental. All of their 777s, and most of the 757s. The 767s only have outlets in the first ten rows of economy....which elite customers get first crack at. They have a standard US two prong outlet, no special adapter or converter needed.
Wayne, On American Airlines there are some seats, not just First Class, where you can use the airline adapter to charge your laptop. You know which seats these are as there are little lightning bolt type symbols near the seat number. You could check into the iGO charger. With iGo you can get different tips that let you charge all the different devices. It also has the airplane adapter. But none of it matters if you aren't in a seat with the lightning bolts. ; ) Pam
British between London and Abu Dhabi. Delta otherwise. Maybe I'll bring a hand crank generator to charge the battery. :-) Pedal power? "Borrow" from first class? Ha.
Ah, I just checked with LG. Five hours of viewing time. That's very good. I would expect that it should be turned off if one pauses for long periods, say, even 15 minutes.
