Rechargeable lithium batteries in carry-on

Hi everyone. Help! Or am I worrying for nothing?

I'm having trouble interpreting the new rules about carrying rechargeable batteries on board planes. I'll have 2-3 for my small (Elph) digital camera and they still have their little protective "cases".

Will that be a problem to carry on? I can't figure out their lithium content (any engineers out there?) We aren't checking bags.

Thanks!

Yes, that's a problem. The latest rule says batteries are okay inside whatever they are powering (camera, ipod, alarm clock) but no extra batteries are allowed for carry on. I have seen that it's okay to bring hearing aid batteries as long as they are in their original pacakaging. I haven't seen any other exception.

Hi,

Last Oct. I took 6 extra rechargeable batteries with me in my carry-on. I have a small camera bag with my camera, small tripod, extra cards and batteries. No problems yet. We flew from NJ to Frankfurt and Munich to NJ. I also did this in '06 with no trouble. Actually, I did the same in '05 and '03 too.

As I read the TSA information, it says that you can carry spare batteries in your carryon luggage, NOT in checked luggage. And since you don't plan to check luggage, you should be OK.

If they have their little protective cases, there is no problem bringing those in your carry-on.

The rules just went into effect in January I think. They only affect checked luggage. As I recall, it has something to do with the cargo hold being unpressurized/unregulated and unmonitored. The concern is that the batteries can trigger off a fire/small explosion, which they are less likely to do in the cabin. Just going from memory here, so I may be wrong, but there were some good explanatory articles published right before the rules went into effect.
