receiving discounts when presenting RS Guidebook

It always worked for us. But, if the discount is in a 2010 book, don't present an 08 or 09 and expect the discount. Also it is only one discount and sometimes the discount for cash is bigger. .......... PS If reserving via the internet, mention the book. A couple of times we were told that we should have done that and they seem slightly unhappy when we present the book at checkin.

Made a reservation at a hotel listed in RS Istanbul guide book that the hotel offered a discount for RS guide book users. Required seeing the book at checkin. I mentioned the book during reservation and at checkin they asked to see the book which I showed them. Saved 16E/nite.

You know, our first trip to Europe using a Rick Steves book was quite funny. We followed his suggestions going through Germany, and several places just fawned over us after we showed them the book, giving us discounts, free maps, free drinks (all outlined in the book). Makes you think they really know which side their bread's buttered on. The best one was an older couple we stayed with who struggled with speaking English, but when they saw our copy of the book, said "Oh, you're friends of Rick Steves!" We had to assure them that we really didn't know the guy.
