8 days after submission to passport acceptance facility to it's in the mail! But the first facility, postal, that's another story...
I want to report how fast passport processing was. My partner needed to renew, but not by standard methods. Her name, "not her real name" as you see in the advice columns, is "Mary Jean Smith Jones", born Mary Jean Smith. Her original passport from close to 50 years back, which she still has, is under Smith. Eventually, she added a married name, Jones, but used both names during the years. And that was on her expiring passport, at the last renewal she was still married and surname was Smith Jones. At this point, everything other than her passport is Smith and this needed to be changed back. This ruled out online renewal mail renewal. Local post office "specialist" twice turned up her nose at this (once when I first went in to find out what to do) and said she would not send it in without legal proof of name change (not required in Pennsylvania) and in spite of two calls we made to State Department who said it was not necessary, that birth cert and their copying the RealID would be sufficient.
Long story shortened, she took it across the river to the Camden NJ Courthouse, where there was no problem with this, her RealID Drivers' License using Smith took care of this, they made a certified copy. This was done on September 29, by October 7 it was in the mail with tracking. They would not have received it for processing until at least 9/30, and the email showing processed and sending it out was sent October 7. Pretty good turn-around time.
As an aside, she finally obtained her RealID just prior to this, she had actually been prevented from getting RealID at her last Drivers' License renewal, where she also correcting her name back to Smith, when the clerk apparently did not want to be bothered processing a RealID and refused her stating her original SSA card from the early 60s was no good for this - which I know to be untrue as I did this during Covid with my original SSA card, fortunately being able to pull the many-years old lamination off it (I am also a retired SSA Specialist). Having the Real ID was a big help, as for this to have been issued her birth certificate, SSN, and citizenship were proven to the government.
As a further aside, to get the Real ID at this point was necessary as she is currently on a domestic trip and otherwise without her passport, so that was booked under Smith and the RealID needed for our airports. We had a previously booked a September trip into Canada under Smith Jones, so we could not start the process until we returned, her passport was required. This started when we booked a trip for next March for which she needed the renewal, and in anticipation did this under Smith. My own passport will need renewal when we return then, which should be piece of cake as I can do mine online.
