Here's another "drool-worthy" filming location which CNN passed over - Peñiscola Castle, just north of Valencia, was featured in season 6 of Game of Thrones. In real life its history is just as interesting as the show - it started out as a Moorish castle in the 11th century before becoming a Knights Templar stronghold after the Reconquista swept through the area. The Templars totally rebuilt the castle at the turn of the 14th century. After the Templars were persecuted, the castle became home to Benedict XIII, the famous 15th century Avignon Pope. Most of the castle remains intact and is surrounded by a charming white-washed old town, well worth a visit if one is in the area.
