rail europe phone card

We are traveling to France and Italy this summer and have booked Rail Europe tickets. When the tickets were sent they included a phone card for 10 free min. and an option to add additional minutes. There is also an option to get a free SIM card with purchase of $20 phone calling time. Does this seem like a good deal compared to what is available in Europe?

Given R Europe prior history of over charging for train tickets, I would check very carefully to see what the min charges are for the "free" SIM card. Phone cards for calling back to the US are very cheap in Europe so you need to read the fine print.

We bought one set of tickets from Milan to Verona (after assuring myself that they cost the same from RailEurope as from Trenitalia) last summer. We did get the $20 phone for our daughter because we would not let her take her iPhone. It actually worked out very well. It comes with a US 800 number so that her friends and other family members could call her for free. She did use up the $20 worth of lutgoing calls too, but much of it was in texting us when she was off on her own. I didn't compare it to a SIM card bought in Europe as we did not have any unlocked phone to put it in.
