Is using the Rail Europe app on IPhone an easy way to purchase regional train tickets while in Italy?
Or is there a better app?
I looked around the forum and train articles but couldn't find any info on this.
Thank you!

Regionals are so easy. Just get the ticket when you have a moment at the station. No extra costs, no language problems at the machine after you press English, no trying to get the app to work, no premium for Rail Europe.
If you want to use an app, the people who actually run the trains, Trenitalia, have a good app that I have used several times.
Rail Europe does not list all trains, and often charges a mark up (sometimes substantial) on trains they do sell. Unless you have a specific reason to use them, avoid them.
For regional trains in Italy, there's no need to use anything other than Trenitalia. Here's their app for iPhones: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/trenitalia/id331050847?mt=8
There's an Android-only app that I learned about on this Forum; my friend used it, and said that all the Italians he met were using it too. It has Trenitalia, Trenord, and Italo schedules on it. Even though you can't use it on an iPhone, I'm posting it here in case it's useful to others. It's called Orario Treni by Paolo Conte, and here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.paoloconte.treni_lite
Alight, thank you for the response. I didn't realize Rail Europe marked up. I'll download the Trentalia app, and buy some tickets in person.
Again thank you, great resourceful info as usual.

Rail Ejurope is a travel agency selling tickets to N Americans. It is not a train company.
Denise,
Yes, there is a better app for purchasing rail tickets in Italy. You might have a look at www.trainline.eu which is accessible online using a laptop or via their convenient app. They sell tickets for both major Italian rail networks at the same price as the networks. It is necessary to register on the website first, including credit card details, but after that it's very easy. I usually prefer to buy using a desktop computer, so that I can print the tickets out. However, I believe they can also send details to a mobile phone.
