Rail Erupoe cheaper than Bahn?

Hi all, I'm trying to book a night train with sleeper from Paris to Munich for Sep 10. I've heard that RE is generally more expensive, but in my case its 50 Euros cheaper. I'm trying to get a private sleeper cabin for my wife and I and below are the prices I'm seeing.

79 EUR - Rail Europe sleeper - "1 x Double Sleeper Value"
129 EUR - Bahn sleeper - "1 person in Economy Double cabin"

Can this be right? Has anyone booked a sleeper through RE? I'm tempted to book it but I'm paranoid that we'll end up in a shared cabin.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Tyson

I'm not seeing it. I do see the 129 euro DB price for one person in a 2 person cabin (possibility of getting a roommate), 179 euro for one person in a single cabin (its yours alone), or 258 euro for the 2 people in a double cabin (just the two of you).
When I look at Rail Europe, I get prices in USD. $193 for just second class seat, add $71 for a spot in a 3-person cabin (possibility of getting 2 roommates). That comes to $264. Converted to euros, that is 194 euros.

The Bahn shows a fare of 258€ (~$350) for 2 people in an economy double with a non-refundable SparNight ticket. With a normal fare it is 459,20€, or $622. RailEurope's website shows $600 for the same accommodations (where did you get 79€?). Both the Bahn normal fare and the RailEurope fares have limited refundability.

Oh my gosh, based on the prices Sam and Lee are quoting, unless you are willing to possibly share a cabin with strangers for the night, why don't you check out what airfare would be for the two of you? I bet you could fly for less.

I'm looking at mainline airlines between Paris and Munich and seeing fares starting at $170/person. And, remember, the night train takes care of one nights accommodation. If you fly, you still have to have the cost of a night's hotel accommodations in Paris or Munich. Subtract that from $350 and you won't have much for left for airfare.

And don't even think about RyanAir. By the time you get out to Beauvais and in from "Munich West" (ie, Strasbourg East), you're almost to Munich.

Daytime rail connections from Paris to Munich are as quick as 6 hours - about what flying takes when you take into consideration getting to the airport, checking in, security, boarding time, flight time, deplaning, waiting for luggage, finding ground transportation, traveling to town (40 minutes in Munich). And daytime rail transportation looks like as low as 138€ for two in September.

Thanks for the replies. I just realized I was using raileurope-world.com and not raileurope.com. I'm not sure what the difference is, but the latter tells me "This trip is not eligible for reservations until a later date".

Is the first site legit? This is where I got my numbers. I'm showing the following:
Departure 20:05 Paris EST
Arrival 07:10 MUENCHEN HBF
Duration 11h 05m Direct
Best first class sleeper 79EUR

This seems to good to be true as the second class sleeper is 109EUR.

Comparing apples to apples, it does look like the RailEurope-World has slightly lower fares than DB. On DB, 2 people in an economy double cabin is 258 euro nonrefundable savings fare. On RailEurope-World, the exact same deal is 238 euro. Who'd have thunk.

If it was me, I would take the ICE from Paris to Frankfurt, which takes less than 4 hours and then the ICE to Munich, which is about 3 hours. See the country side, maybe do some sightseeing in Frankfurt, and sleep in a real bed in a hotel in Munich.

Hi,

As suggested above, you can take the early departure from Paris Est to Frankfurt Hbf. on the ICE. You'll be in Frankfurt shortly before 1100 am. Have lunch at the station., unhurried. Then take the direct ICE to Munich. If you want to get to Munich direct from Paris, the CNL night train is the that option. I've done both options...all right.. With the CNL you're in Munich a bit after 0700....an extra day. The day option on the ICE gets you into Munich by the late afternoon.

I can't believe tickets are that expensive. Just bought a ticket Amsterdam to Berlin - 6 hour trip - for 39 euros per person - 90 days from now - non refundable. See my post - "Help How to Buy train tickets."

Barb, those "tickets" are more expensive because it is a night train, and they are also paying for the sleeping compartment rental.

"This trip is not eligible for reservations until a later date".

I wonder if it will only be eligible for reservations if tickets are still unsold approaching train date. Most night train "reservations" sell out long before the train date, and in fact the lowest fares sometimes sell out immediately.

The RE-World ticket are only sent by mail and have an additional 12€ charge.
