Quick Turnaround at LAX

One of my options while shopping for return flights to the US from overseas is a United connection thru LAX - specifically with a 2 hour layover before connecting to another United flight to get home. For anyone who's passed thru LAX recently, is 2 hours enough time to navigate the international return procedures (customs, immigration, verification of ongoing checked luggage, etc) and still make the next flight? TIA

LAX is an incredibly busy airport....to be on the safe side, I would "hope" to make it, but not "expect". If there are several flights coming in the same time, 2 hours is really tight. If you have the chance to build in more slack to your itinerary, do so...there are lots of good places to eat and relax at LAX that will make for a much more comfortable connection.

LAX is extremely busy and poorly operated. My answer would be no. I live in The Land of La....and fly in and out from LAX. Always the most taxing part of my journey. Build in more time or prepare for frustration.

You might be ok if your flight is on time and arrives and departs from terminal 7, United's special international terminal. Your ongoing flight could also be from terminal 6 or 8. Check the flight you are considering taking to see what is true for today's flight.

If United is selling you this ticket, not Expedia or the like, they think you should be able to make this connection, incoming plane dependent. There are seven LAX to DEN flights each day so if you aren't worried about taking a later flight if you miss your ticketed flight, I MIGHT be willing to try the 2 hour connection...

Thanks for the advice everyone.
Mona - hadn't considered just flying into Denver rather than CSprings - that might indeed be the better option.
Anyone know whether the processing of arriving international flights is any more efficient at SFO? That might be an option too. Thanks again.

I don't know conclusively, but one thing to watch out for in terms of SFO is fog-related delays. I've experienced that (and that's less likely to happen at LAX). Look at the average airline on-time stats for your flight to confirm. LAX is at least blessed with very good weather conditions most of the time.

I second what Agnes says about SFO and fog. I've been stranded and diverted because of fog issues there. I avoid SFO if I can--but we're flying out of there to Europe in June...

Thanks Agnes.
Looks like it'll be Denver then - and a much more relaxed transition to my domestic flight.
I continue to be amazed by the collective wisdom that resides here, and what a great resource this forum is. Thanks again to everyone for the insights - helped a lot.

I love the Denver Airport - I think it's one of the nicest in the US in terms of architecture. LAX is constantly expanding/ reorganizing/ improving, but the food options are terrific in the "improved" terminals (similar to Denver but more diverse).

I love the Denver Airport....

Yes, it's great for connections but getting there from the city, especially the west side where much of the business activity is, that's pain and I don't see why the rental cars could not have been incorporated directly into the terminal instead of a distance away requiring shuttles, or that buying gas before returning the rental requires a GPS in the neighborhoods before the access road starts since the stations are so cleverly hidden from the freeway.

My beef with the rental car location at DEN is that the attendant at the gate told us to take a specific exit last summer on our way up to Estes Park. It turned out that it was a toll road with no toll booths or way to pay once you enter the highway. We eventually exited but immediately called the agency by googling their name to find out the system. We had to set up an account with our cc as we were going back to the airport the next day to pick up more people and this was the easiest way to get where we wanted to go without driving into Denver. All we could think about as this was happening to us was what we'd read on this forum about people in Europe being caught camera and being fined by the toll company and charged more by the rental company...
