Questions about Eurovision Song Contest 2027 in Burgas, Bulgaria

Maybe there aren't that many Eurovision fans here but prehaps you know someone who would like to visit the ESC next year?
The concerts will be held on those dates: 11 May, 13 May and 15 May.

The hotel prices in Burgas have gone through the roof for those days. It would be literally cheaper to go to a Scandinavian capital than there lol but I imagine many hardcore Eurovision fans would go anyway. Many more would perhaps opt for the nearby resorts instead to save a buck, like the very popular "Sunny Beach".

Me being on a Bulgarian budget (lol) I wonder if I could do it like this on the cheap while at the same time be able to feel some of the huge festive atmosphere and diversity of ethnicities that are going to be there?

  • Stay in Burgas itself a few days before the 11th May/after the 15th May.
  • Stay in the cheaper resorts near Burgas during the ESC semi-finals and final dates above.

I wonder if Pomorie or Nessebar will probably be too family-friendly and sleepy in May for your average ESC fan? I'm looking for places where bars and discos could be open and some ESC crowd-targeted events might be happening.

I don't care much for being at the concerts themselves, it would be fine to see them from some (beach) bar.

It will be the event of the century for Bulgaria in terms of the diversity of tourists we will get. And, most of all it's going to be mostly people around my age so I expect many of the side events to be interesting to me.

I have to admit I'd only vaguely heard of Burgas. I knew it was on the Black Sea coast, but not much more. I've had a look at some pictures and it looks a fine city. There looks to be a lot of historical buildings and some interesting 20th century architecture too. I don't follow Eurovision, so I didn't think about that's where it will be. It will generate a lot of income for the city.

I immediately think about the production of Eurovision. It's one of the biggest audio-visual productions in Europe annually. It features in industry vlogs and magazines every year. I know there's lighting rental companies in London with contracts every year for Eurovision. The production has to rent from all over Europe to get enough lights / sound / video / broadcast gear to stage it. I hope some Bulgarian businesses and local crew can make good money from it being in town.

I'd be interested to hear if other contributors have been to Bulgaria. I don't remember it being talked about much here and I've never been.

GerryM, thanks for your reply still!
Yes, I suppose Burgas isn't that popular abroad but among Bulgarians it's more popular than Varna, the largest city we have on the coast. What I think is more popular in the UK is Sunny Beach, the beach resort that's 45 min by bus from Burgas. Whenever I go there there are always so many Brits.

Anyway, I booked at Nessebar and Sunny Beach for now. They have free cancellation. Nessebar will give me the history fix while Sunny Beach will allow me to go partying... if I feel like it. And it has the better beaches.

Burgas is fine and all but honestly paying 300-500 EUR per night for a hotel in Bulgaria that usually costs 50-100 EUR max is way too much lol but I'm sure the same Eurovision effect happens elsewhere as well.

If anyone traveling for the ESC is reading this, please not that the busses between Burgas and Sunny Beach or the nearby towns like Nessebar and Sozopol stop running at 21:00. With the ESC semi-finals and final concerts starting at 22:00 it's not possible to rely on them for the ESC.

I don't plan to visit the semi-finals or the final for now. My plan is to only visit the day cultural events and watch the ESC on one of the many beach bars in Sunny Beach. It will be more of a pre-active season beach vacation with the occasional Eurovision event.
