Question: Embarking for a Viking River Cruise - Independent Air Travel

We are looking for help from anyone who has booked their own flights to arrive in Europe for a Viking River Cruise - specifically your experience in arriving at the cruise terminal for embarkation.

We bought air via Viking for a cruise from Amsterdam to Basel next month. The flight lands at Schipol at 9:00am, and with travel time via Viking's transport (included with the Viking-purchased air ticket) we will get to the Amsterdam cruise port after 9:00am. We might want to amend our travel plans so that we travel from the US to Portugal before the cruise, which is proving to be a fiasco. We are considering canceling the Viking flight and booking our own flights to accommodate travel to Lisbon and then from Lisbon to Amsterdam to catch the cruise.

i researching our options, a Viking representative advised us that embarkation is at 9:00am on departure date at the port in Amsterdam, but the boat does not take off until 11:30am. However, it was reinforced that we must be on the ship by 9:00am, not after - even though the people being transferred from the airport to the port via Viking's transportation will be arriving after 9:00am.

So we are wondering how stringent the 9:00am check-in time at the ship is. If we arrived at 10:00am would we risk missing admission to the ship?

Thanks so much!
Julie

P.S. I did read other posts that make the argument to not buy flights via the cruise lines because they are very limited in flexibility, the times are often inconvenient and often truncate the last day of the trip. I now understand these cautions!

I have no experience with river cruises, but I do have experience with flying in and out of Schiphol Airport. Like with any other airport, delays can happen. If your cruise departs at 11:30 am, I would always aim to arrive in Amsterdam the night before. Especially if you arrange your flights yourself.

It is never a good plan for air travelers to arrive the same day as their cruise or group tour departs. Have you read about how a huge number of air tickets are changed by the AIRLINE, multiple times, before the actual date of travel? I'm not saying you should "take" Viking's air-arrangements, but, like the frequently disparaged "Proprietary" cruise-ship tours, THEY take responsibility to deliver you to the ship. It's never "your problem." Do you remember WEEKS of disastrous disruption of air schedules in Amsterdam in, I think, 2022?

We're not even talking about alleged "good deals" by Viking Air Department, or annoying "deviation charges" for arriving a day or three before the cruise. We're talking about what would be a reckless decision. This is not like driving to the mall for Christmas shopping.

We've been to Lisbon a few times, and it is (relatively) remote from the rest of Europe. By that, I mean it can be troublesome even to get back to Spain for a flight home to the US. (Lisbon direct flights tend to book up because of ocean cruise activity there.) It is not a responsible decision to book a flight Lisbon-Amsterdam scheduled to arrive at 9:00 AM for an 11:30 ship departure.

I like the idea of seeing another place before reporting to the ship. (A few posters here don't yet have "independent travel" skills, so they underestimate the contrast between a river cruise and several days of FIT travel - but you're not asking about that.)

Make sure you know which dock your boat will be at. I think Viking uses multiple docks in Amsterdam.

But the advantage is that they accept responsibility for meeting you at the airport, tracking you, and getting you to the boat. We made our flexible reservations through Viking, and paid a reasonable extra fee for "deviations" to our flight itinerary.

I don't know how much money you have tied up in the cruise, but if it were me, there is no way I would be counting on flying in and arriving the morning the boat is supposed to leave. From the U.S. or Lisbon.

I guess with a river cruise you could always catch up with it a day or two down the river, but then you have paid for cruise time (and meals and lodging) that you are not getting.

Lets look at this from Viking's perspective. They may want you onboard by 9:00 because they are accommodating the arrivals from Schipol after 9:00. They want you checked-in with your bags delivered to your room. They may have half the boat or more arriving later from Schipol and they want everyone else taken care of before then.

This is the list of River Cruise departures showing which dock they are using. Click on the relevant departure for a map of the dok location-https://river.cruiseportamsterdam.com/page/5/
Viking leaves from many and various docks.

Interestingly I can see many leaving in December at 11.30 pm, but none leaving at 11.30am.

Not that morning or night departure substantially changes the arrive previous day advice above.

I would recommend landing in Schipol the night before and having the hotel where you stay arrange car service directly to the correct dock for your boat. Whether you have Viking-arranged flights or your own, you will feel more secure knowing you can handle a delay.

We took the Danube Waltz in 2023 (Budapest to Passau) and arranged our own flights in order to have flexibility with other things we wanted to do. The hotel staff in Budapest were great at helping us with a car service to ensure we were on time. Similarly, when leaving the concierge staff on the Viking boat were great at helping us arrange a taxi to the train station in Passau. They really don't want any passenger to be unhappy.

I wanted to thank everyone for sharing your honest thoughts and experiences!

It's been really helpful to get feedback that we can take in and digest and make more informed decisions. As of now, we have decided to not make any changes to our itinerary, even though it means we won't be taking advantage of our opportunity to visit Lisbon in December.

Safe & Happy Journeys to All!
