Question about river cruise lines

I know some of you will smirk but after multiple independent trips to Europe, I am starting to feel my age (will be 69 for this planned trip) and I am realizing that I need to do things a bit differently. So next fall, I am planning to add an eight day river cruise in France. Traveling with my sister for the cruise segment. I am thinking of starting the trip in London and Paris, cruise, then Liguria post cruise before flying home.

My question is "Which cruise line?" Viking is out there with the promos, but I have heard negatives. I have been researching Avalon and AMA Waterways as well as Viking. For those of you who have taken a river cruise, which line did you use? Would you do it again? I am looking for good food, relaxation, but NOT a line that is overly fussy since I will be traveling with a carryon only and no longer do fancy-dress.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Hello,
We cruised with AMA Waterways on the Danube a few years back. Wonderful food and service; comfortable room. No fancy dress! Really enjoyed it.
Cheers!

I doubt if people are smirking. There’s no “one way” of traveling. My cousin went on a Viking tour several years ago when she was recovering from cancer - the perfect mode of travel for her, and she had a wonderful time.

Hopefully someone can recommend a travel forum that is focused on river tours, so you can hear a lot of the pros & cons of each provider.

The only thing I can add is that they sell the cruise in part based on the origination and departure city, but the since its a cruise they dont give you any time to see that city "Welcome to Budapest, we leave in the morning" So book extensions at each end. A 10 day cruise is now 14 days at least.

We've traveled Ama and Uniworld, both are fine. We had been traveling in Europe so we did not bring any fancy clothes and nobody cared.

Gary Bembridge on Tips for Travelers, a UK u-tuber, does many programs on river cruising. Highly recommend you review his picks on river cruising and comments. He also does many ocean cruise reviews. We have never been on a river cruise but are considering a Danube cruise from Budapest to Bucharest. Happy travels!

I have been on many river cruises, I love them. I’ve gone top of the line Uniworld to bargain Gate 1. I recommend you go to Cruise Critic web site, read their river cruise forum. I have never gone with Viking because they want full payment months and months in advance. Most other cruise companies ask for a deposit then full payment 2 - 3 months in advance.

We have loved our Viking River and Ocean cruises. No complaints. Not formal or fancy. Ship clean design is simple and so pleasant. We love the meals and wine. They provide great travel lectures. Their air fare can be quite good. They have good sales offers frequently…so watch. But…..yes…it’s that full payment so much sooner than other cruise lines that gets us!! We have honestly booked within 6 mnths of travel so not so painful. When we plan ahead longer term we use other lines.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I appreciate all the links to cruise companies as well as earlier RS forum questions. When I searched, I guess I did not refine my search question enough to find the recent cruise questions. The earlier posts had the "snarky/smirky" responses but were from years ago.

I appreciate the links provided. Hadn't heard of Nico or Gate 1 or that Tauck offered cruises. I will check out the Cruise Critic website for sure. Again, thanks to all for your responses.

I've done several, one with VIking and 3 with now out of business Vantage.

They are a great way to do recons for future trips...check out some cities for half a day, and return later to ones you really liked. It's also a nice break in longer independent trips. You can go do your own research and explore awhile, and then kinda turn off your brain while onboard, and let the cruise company do the work.

We also like that I could grab a bike off the boat and explore, while my wife took the included tour. After 38 years, we enjoy each others company, but a break isn't a bad thing.

We have done several river cruises including now out of business Vantage, AMA Waterways and Gate 1.

Our last river cruises were on the Nile in Egypt with Gate 1 and included a full tour of Egypt.

I compared Gate1. Viking, OAT and several others.

Gate 1 had the best deal, by far. It was a little over HALF of Viking's price for virtually the same tour. We stayed in four or five star hotels and the cruises (two of them) were excellent.

It is best to compare before booking a river cruise. Compare the itinerary, prices, what is included, etc.

Avalon and AMA Waterways are excellent companies, but their prices have trended up. Best to compare.

OP.
Yes, YouTube.
It should be a primary source for anything asked on this forum. You can find your cruise info. You can find food info. You can look at sites. You can look at packing and luggage.
It is a fountain of information on almost anything, and then some.

We have travelled three times with Scenic USA which is an Australian company with offices here in the US. They do an outstanding job.

We had excellent experiences with AMAWaterways but not good experiences with Viking. Our first cruise with Viking was good enough but the second one on the Danube was horrible. Lots of “rules”, poor food and drink, couldn’t wait to leave the ship!

Been on two Viking river cruises -- Amsterdam to Budapest and the south of France around Lyon. Both were excellent. And are looking to book something with Viking for next summer. River cruising is far more relaxing than ocean cruises. We have been on 12 European ocean cruises and shifting to river cruises.

when looking at pricing, be sure to compare apples to apples. Some lines include crew gratuities, some don't. Some have open bars, others only include beer/wine with meals. Some include shore excursions, some don't. Consider using a travel agent for booking a cruise as often they will be aware of pricing and perks that are available only through them - example Expedia Cruises.

What treemoss said. YouTube is our #1 resource for planning trips. You can see for yourself whatever you’re looking for rather than rely on other people’s opinions.

We did our first river cruise with Viking in the middle of October last year. We thoroughly enjoyed it, which was a good thing since we had booked another one the following December. We started in Basel Switzerland and went down the Rhine to Amsterdam. Reading the previous responses, our time was different than others here. Viking gives you 1 free tour at most every stop and you can add a paid tour in addition if you would like. We did see most of the towns where we started from or disembarked at with Viking. We thought that the food was delicious. I do not drink alcohol so having top shelf liquor that is included or not does nothing for me. The staff was very attentive and pleasant to boot! With Viking on the Rhine you will generally travel the river at night except in the most scenic part (Lorelei area). Our first cruise with them we booked a room on the lowest level of the boat around the midsection. Perfectly fine for us. Our next trip last December was on the Danube. We went downriver from Passau Germany to Budapest. On that cruise we had a second floor (main entry floor) room with a french(?) balcony. We didn't think it was any better so our third trip in November of 2024 we are back down at the bottom.
You can research the itineraries and prices with any of the cruise lines that you are taking. We are getting ready to take a Celebrity cruise across the Atlantic and I feel that the are nickle and dimeing us compared to Viking.

We thoroughly recommend Viking as a river cruise option.
Good luck!

We love Viking. We’ve done two river cruises (Rhine & Seine), both were very good. Also did four Viking ocean and one expedition cruise to Antarctica. Three more cruises booked. The line is a good fit for us. Everything is as advertised. Exceptional customer service.

Just an update on plans (or lack of) so far....I have been immersed in YouTube videos and reviews of various lines and trips. I am struggling with a number of things r/t river cruising, especially with how meal times are fixed and paying to excursions that I may not wish to take. Then there are the differences between how the lines define "all inclusive". I may not want to eat at 7 or 7:30 if I had a late lunch. What happens then? One of the videos I reviewed the poster opted not to go on an excursion and was tracked down to find out why. Please...I don't want to detail my travel plans with anyone other than my sister.

I have read of one cruise line that prices their cruises on the "hotel" part only (e.g. room and meals), with excursions extra and by choice. But I am mostly struggling with the price. My budget for this trip was substantial (10K) and I had thought it would be 3-4 weeks, but with the cruise eating up almost half of that, I am struggling. Travel agents in VT are few and far between, esp those who specialize in river cruises so my next step will be an on-line search for agents.

So I am also back to looking at my original plan of 7 nights London, 7 nights Paris, and 7 nights Liguria region.

I had trouble following your recent posting. It seems to be disjointed. As I stated earlier we have been on 12 ocean cruises in Europe and only three river cruises. To sum the difference -- Ocean cruises are far more flexible with many options from dinning times to excursions with a couple thousand guests. We tend to treated them as a floating hotel and travel vehicle. Almost all of our shore activity is self planned. We rarely to an ocean cruise's excursion.

River cruises are very different. Because of the size of the ship you don't have options for full size bars, all day dinning, entertainment, etc. Meal times on river cruises are fixed so it is a take it or leave it but we have never had any problem with that. BUT -- we seldom eat lunch on the ship either. We just skip it because we generally somewhere else. The food service is not available 12 hours a day as it is on a cruise ship nor is it as extensive. No room. It is amazing what the chef can do with very limited space. Second, it is very standard for most river cruises to include a half day excursion, generally a walking, guided tour of the port stop. Some tours have been so so but we have enjoyed all of them. General we stay in town after the tour, have lunch and work our way back to the ship later that afternoon. Most of the river cruises offer some optional, paid tours that may be all day or certainly for the afternoon. We have skipped some morning tours and nobody came looking for us or said anything about missing the tour. However -- we also advised the on-board staff that we would not be participating in the morning tour.

Because of the size of the ship and much smaller passenger group there is a tendency for the staff and other passengers to be much more friendly, attuned to your activities and schedule and know your name. You can not get lost in a crowd on a river cruises. River cruises are far more social than an ocean cruise. Probably should warn you that if you are a party of 2 you will be sharing tables with other guests. Since river cruises have more "inclusion" they tend to be more expensive than a similar length ocean cruises. From our experience we think they are worth.

From reading your other postings and comments, I wonder if you have developed expectations for the river cruises that will be hard to match. Still not sure exactly what you want. You claim to have hear negatives about Viking. What are the "negatives" you have heard about Viking or other river cruises?

Frank-both Youtube and Cruise Critic have had less than stellar reviews of Viking. Cabins smaller than on other lines, fewer options for excursions, full payment up-front, and sometimes poor customer service. The pro's for Viking were the number of ships and available trips. And yes, there are many positive reviews for Viking.

I do admit to not having investigated river cruising enough prior to my initial post (but that is one reason this forum exists). I have also been on a number of ocean cruises and did not expect the level of amenities to be the same on a river cruise. Bottom line, one YouTube video describes a river cruise as an escorted trip but on water in that there is significant structure to your day. I just need to determine if that structure in one I want to try out.

On the river cruises that we have done, we did have several excursions that were full day and involved taking busses. Yes, a few times, the port where we docked involved a walking tour.

What we liked about river cruising is that with somewhere between 130-160 passengers, you get to know a large percentage of your fellow passengers.

Most people that do river cruises are seniors, but there are usually some young people as well.

Hi:

About 2 weeks ago we decided, along with another couple, to look into a Christmas Market Cruise for 2025. So, since I am the planner, I have been immersed in YouTube videos & Cruise Critic! I think we will be booking with AMA. It seems to have the "luxury" the other couple would like and has several choices of included excursions each day that will work for all of us. They are going to splurge for a balcony cabin, while I think we will be fine with the lower level cabin.

In my research, I looked at Nicko, which looks like a nice budget friendly option. If just myself & husband, I think we would book a cruise with them.

I would love to know what you finally decide!

Tina
