I have read on a previous thread that it is advantageous to register on the Trentitalia website before purchasing tickets. How do you register and what are the disadvantages if you don't register, I am planning to purchase tickets within the next day or two and am a bit confused by the process. Thanks for any clarification.
On the Trenitalia.com website, select the "Customer Area" link in the upper right of the page. Instead of logging in, click the "register" link and fill out the form. The advantage of having an account is that you can always log back in and find all of your tickets easily. Sometimes, people have had issues with emails containing their tickets. Without an account, they can't get their tickets. Having an account is an added measure of security for your tickets.
Registering on trenitalia is easy. Hit the registration button. Actually not a button but the word, Register just to the right of the trenitalia logo on the home page is three words Register/Customer Assistance/Manage Your Account. Just double click on Register and it will take you to the registration screen.
Note that the US is Stati Uniti for your personal data. You will still have to provide a mailing address in Italy later in the form; you can use the address of your hotel or apartment.

Nancy,
You can also easily buy tickets for both Trenitalia and Italo at www.capitainetrain.com which are the same price as if buying from the rail networks. Registration on the site is required but that's an easy process and I've found that's a great (and problem-free) way to buy rail tickets for Italy.
Thanks everyone for your help and prompt replies.
