My wife and I are traveling to Italy next month. It appears that the cost of no-contact cell phones is even lower than the last time we were there. Has any one done this? Is this a better option or are we better off getting one of the world phone like Mobal? Any insights. Thanks.
No-contract disposable SIM cards are very cheap in Italy. Something like - pay € 10, get € 5 in credits and so. Remember most US carriers use TDMA and will not allow use of a SIM card.
2 US carriers use CDMA - Verizon and Sprint (won't work in Europe unless it is a specific worldphone)
2 US carriers use GSM - AT&T and T-Mobile (will work in Europe but with extra fees) I think the OP is talking about getting a phone while in Italy. It should be much cheaper than in the US where it is not easy and expensive to buy an unlocked phone. It should be much cheaper than using an international service such as Mobal as well. TIM, Wind and Vodafone are the main carriers in Italy. Most cities have many phone shops. I am getting a SIM card for my unlocked android phone as soon as I check into my hotel in Venice.
i used vodafone in italy, 25 euros for the phone and it came with 5 euros worth of air time, then you add on as needed, small little flip phone is all i needed
