I am going to Sicily in May and want to take least expensive route to Naples from Sicily. Also does anyone know if ferry leaves from Catania area. All i see so far is from Palermo. How much are the cabins on the boat and is it 10 1/2 hours. Linda from Atlanta
You can find all the info for the ferries by searching for "ferry sicily to naples". You will find departure times and ports, arrival times, fares and cabin costs.
If there is a toll free phone number, use it to ask an angent your questions.
I took the overnight ferry back and forth from Salerno to Messina. It was convenient because I was able to sleep and didn't waste valuable touring time in transit. It was pretty comparable to staying in an inexpensive hotel - under 100 euros.
The trip from Salerno to Messina was easy and uneventful. I was the only English speaking person on board so it was a bit challenging when the announcements were all made in Italian. The vast majority of passengers were truck drivers who were transporting their cargo on the ferry. The port in Salerno was easy to navigate.
Returning from Messina to Salerno was more challenging. The dock area where the ferry departed from was not easily accessible and was a little scary waiting to board the ship in an industrial area at 10:00 at night by myself.
I would recommend the ferry if you are with others but I would not be comfortable doing it alone.
