Proper dress

Are knee-length pants appropriate and weather-wise for a trip to Germany mid-May and London the 1st week of June? We have been both places before but never in the spring.

Please clarify where in Germany? Here's the best weather site I've found http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.aspinput your locations and dates and you get nicely summarized historical weather data.No one can predict what the weather will be more than about a week out, this is why historical data is useful to you. But the weather in a particular year can vary significantly from historical averages. However, the historical averages are probably more reliable than someone posting here and saying "the weather was blah-blah-blah when we were there last year."

We will be hanging around with a bunch of European police officer friends, which can be trouble in itself. But I'm trying to pack a bit lighter, instead of jeans, maybe knee-pants, and lightweight dress pants. I will check the weather site, though. Thank you for that info.

Good advice to check the charts first. Here's a link to another decent travel weather resource:

To me, London feels chilly in early June, even in the sun. Jeans and a lighter long-sleeve shirt work well. Germany feels warm (but not hot) in the sun in June and can be a little chilly in the shade. For me, it's jeans and a short sleeve shirt. I've never been there in May, but I would plan on it feeling a little cooler.

Thank you to all. Think I'll stick with dress pants and 1 pair of jeans.

Consider cotton-blend Khaki's- Docker type pants. That's what I always take no matter what time of year. I usually wear 1 pair of black, pack 1 or 2 pair black and one khaki colored. They wear well, don't wrinkle too much, go with everything and wash and dry well if needed.

Ginny,

You have to pack a pair of long pants because you never know how the weather is in Germany.
You can't go wrong with a dark color jeans.
Last year I found a pair of nice thin skinny jeans at forever21 for $19.00. They pack small, are easy to wear and look nice. You can dress them up or down.

Considering it got up in the 70's this past week, you never know how hot it will get in mid May or June. It could be really warm, even hot, or cold and chilly. I have seen it do all those things. Bring a pair of shorts if you like or for that matter, a long, loose skirt or sundress. All of those things are worn over here. A lot of capris, or leggings under short dresses. Kind of depends on your age and your body type there.

I never wear anything but jeans and white sneakers unless I am going to work. No one knows I am American.

Excellent advice, thank you. Perhaps I'll tuck a pair of kneepants in the luggage. I think since the dress pants are so much lighter than the jeans, I'll stick with a couple of those, too. Plus they will be good for the possible dressier nights we might have.
And the always useful scarves, of course.
Maybe this time I won't over pack...as much...hah!

My wife's favorite travel pants are capris. My daughter had a pair of what I would call gauchos (wider legs longer than knees, light knit polyester material) that she wore a lot when we were in Europe in the fall. It was unseasonably cold but they were both comfortable.

Again, a round of thanks to all suggestions. I will take a couple pair of knee pants, dress pants, and 1 pair of jeans. Thankfully, we will have access to convenient laundry facilities for a change, so I feel better taking less and wearing it more often.
